Jackie Chan's 2 Children: All About Jaycee and Etta

Jackie Chan may be one of the most recognizable action stars in the world, but the father-of-two is notoriously secretive about his family life.

He and his wife, Joan Lin, have been married for over 40 years and have one child together, a son, Jaycee Chan. Jackie also has an estranged daughter, Etta Ng Chok Lam, who he shares with former beauty queen Elaine Ng Yi-Lei.

Jackie and Joan married in 1982 and had their only child, a son, Jaycee, that same year. Seventeen years later, the legendary stuntman hit the headlines when reports emerged of his affair with Elaine. The winner of the election gave birth to their daughter Etta in 1999.

The Karate Kid the star rarely spoke about the affair, although in his memoirs he admitted to a series of misdeeds, including cheating on his wife Never grow up.

“I’ve said in interviews that I did well by a lot of people, but not by my family,” he wrote. “That I was not a good father or a good husband, but I did my duty to my son and his mother.”

Jackie said he spent a lot of time working when Jaycee was growing up. “I didn’t see my family much at all. If you asked me now if I regret this, I would say yes.”

Jackie and his wife Joan welcomed their son Jaycee on December 3, 1982. “I didn’t care what he looked like. I wanted to make sure he was healthy,” he wrote Never grow up.

The martial arts expert went on to note the similarities between himself and his son, even at a young age. “I took one look and saw that my son was also bipedal, which made me happy to no end. Only then did I realize that this child was my child and then nothing else mattered,” wrote Jackie.

Growing up, Jaycee spent most of his time with his mom because of Jackie’s busy work schedule. “When he was a kid, he could only see me around 2 a.m.,” the actor said Los Angeles Times 2015 After high school, Jaycee attended the College of William and Mary for two semesters before moving to Hong Kong to pursue his own career as a singer and actor.

In an interview with in 2009 Hollywood Reporter, Jaycee talked about wanting to step out of her father’s shadow. “I’m lucky to have a father who’s really famous, but (people) don’t really know me for who I am… they only know me as Jackie Chan’s son,” he said. “The hardest part for me is letting people know what I’m really capable of doing on my own.”

To stand out, Jaycee said The New York Times that he avoided doing action films, instead focusing on smaller film roles and his music career.

Jaycee managed to find success in Hong Kong, but was arrested in Beijing in 2014 and sentenced to six months in prison for possession of marijuana. After his arrest, Jackie released a statement on his website.

“When I first heard the news, I was absolutely furious. As a public figure, I feel very embarrassed; as his father, I am very sad and disappointed,” he wrote before addressing his son directly. “You did something wrong and you must be responsible for the consequences. I am your daddy and I will always be with you. Together we will face the road ahead.”

Jackie continued, “I should take some of this responsibility too because as his father I didn’t teach him well.”

Jackie later told The Associated Press that his son’s time in prison helped Jaycee mature and even improved their father-son relationship. He also revealed that he was inspired to be a better father after working with Jaden Smith The Karate Kid (2010).

“I was too Chinese, too traditional – you, son, go away, I don’t want to help you, you have to help yourself,” he said. Jackie said he was amazed at how supportive Will Smith was during filming. “[He was] helping his son to be in the film, every day on the set. I say, ‘why am I so stubborn? I have to help my son,’ explained Jackie.

Jackie’s daughter, Etta, gave birth to Elaine on November 19, 1999. Although he kept quiet about his estranged daughter, Jackie acknowledged his affair in her memoirs, calling it a “serious mistake”.

“When news broke of my affair that resulted in a child, the media frenzy was like a bomb going off,” he wrote. “I wanted to call Joan, but I didn’t know what to say. I wouldn’t know how to explain this. It wasn’t a mistake I could fix just by saying ‘I’m sorry’. ”

The actor described how his wife forgave him, but he no longer mentioned Etta or Elaine. His daughter, for her part, previously said that the two were not in a relationship. “He is not my dad. I have nothing against him. He is my biological father, but he is not in my life,” she said. Express in 2015.

Etta also made headlines in 2018 when she revealed that she and her partner Andi Autumn were homeless. In a YouTube video that has since been deleted, Etta said: “We’ve been homeless for a month because of homophobic parents. We pretty much slept under bridges and stuff.”

In November 2018, Etta and Autumn got married. The couple announced the news in posts on Instagram that have since been deleted. “Home is with a family you can choose and we are never alone,” wrote Etta. “Love is immeasurable [sic] stronger than blood.”
