Jada Pinkett Smith Says Chris Rock’s Comedy Special Was ‘Full of Lies and Unwarranted Insults’

In the new book by Jade Pinkett Smith Worthythe actress seems to have shared her opinion Chris Rock: Selective Outragewhich went live on Netflix in March, though she doesn’t mention the project by name.

“… What do you do, say, if someone decides to make a comedy special full of lies and unjustified insults? You love them like God, and you tell yourself when people get hurt that it could be that they believe they’ll feel better if they shake it off,” writes Jada. “Can I honestly say I’ve never been there? The answer is no. And that’s where compassion and good wishes come in.”

Jada — who details the incident at the 2022 Oscars when husband Will Smith punched Rock in the face — writes that Rock has “hurt my feelings in the past” and “even though I wanted to hold my grudges, I’ve learned that he would hurt me more than him.”

He adds that Rock “deserves my care and consideration despite the fact that he would choose to drag me on stage. That’s his problem, not mine. From spirit to spirit, he’s my brother…”

Selective rage, which was recorded in Jada’s hometown of Baltimore, marked the first time Rock had spoken publicly about the incident. Will, who has since apologized, is banned from the Academy for 10 years.

“Anyone who really knows knows that I had nothing to do with that s—. I had no ‘plots,'” Rock, 58, said in his comedy special. He called Will, 55, a “bitch” multiple times in the special and gushed about Jada, referencing their clash over the 2016 Oscars.

“I made a joke about her. Who cares? That’s how it is: she starts, I finish,” Rock said at the time in the comedy special. “That’s what the hell happened. Nobody messes with this bitch. She started this with… Nobody messes with her.”

A source told PEOPLE back in March after Selective Rage: “Jada had no part in all of this, other than cursing her. Chris is obsessed with her and has been for almost 30 years.”

Jada reacted to the Emmy-nominated comedy in a recent interview with The New York Timessaying, “I remember my heart breaking, my heart breaking, and I remember my feelings being so hurt. And then I remember being able to smile and wish him well at the same time.”

She told PEOPLE she hasn’t spoken to Rock since the Oscars incident, but revealed he approached her at the edge of the stage during a break in the broadcast right after the slap.

“Chris came down to the end of the stage and tried to apologize to me. He said, ‘I meant you no harm.’ I said, ‘I can’t talk about that now, Chris. This is some old s…’ I thought this was it [about] Oscar 2016 and … their stuff they had before I even came on the scene in the late 80’s. I have to leave it up to Will and Chris to talk about it, but they certainly got theirs.”

Was Jada offended by the joke at the center of the Oscars incident?

“I mean, that’s what comedians do,” she said. “I would just have to say that I’m not really here to pass any judgment on how people choose to express themselves and express their art. I will say that they definitely hurt me a few times. Chris hurt me a lot. But at the end of the day, also, being in the spotlight comes with the territory.”
