Jada Pinkett Smith Says She and Will Smith Lived as ‘Single’ People After They ‘Broke Up in 2016’

Jada Pinkett Smith is sharing more about her split from husband Will Smith.

The Worthy the author is a guest in the new episode Intentionally with Jay Shetty, talking about his childhood, career and relationships in a wide-ranging conversation.

At one point, Jada, 52, opened up about her relationship with Will, 55, whom she married in 1997. She explained that she had to “melt away my romanticism about what I thought marriage should be”.

According to Jada, “there were a few breaks between Will and I” during their marriage, including a “big break” around her 40th birthday in 2011.

“We were actually looking toward separation and divorce, and we were separated. The world just didn’t know,” she recalled. “Then we had a reconciliation. And then 2016 came and we had a final break. But the world didn’t know.”

She adds: “I think there was some misconception about open marriage because we lived as single people and the world didn’t know…”

The Girls trip the actress said when they “broke up in 2016, “he went on to live life as a bachelor, I went on to live life as a single woman.”

In her book Worthy, Jada reveals that she and Will “lived separate lives and were” at the 2022 Oscars that night “as a family, not as husband and wife.” Jada further confirmed that she and Will have been separated since 2016 on an NBC News special with Hoda Kotb.

During that interview, Kotb asked, “Why not just have an amicable divorce?” to which Jada replied, “We don’t want to.”

“We love our family. And we love each other. It’s more of a life partnership,” she explained and added with a laugh: “Now, in 10 years, Hoda? Who knows.”

Kotb asked, “Do you have an agreement though that if you start dating someone, you tell him? Or if he starts dating someone, he tells you?”

“Well, you know, right now what we’re focused on, which has been so beautiful, is the deep healing of everything that’s happened,” Jada said. “Now, what will happen after that, I don’t know yet.”

She told PEOPLE that we’re “still figuring it out,” regarding her marriage to Will.

“A lot has happened. The thing about relationships is that they’re constantly moving. Relationships are, it’s an organism. It’s its own thing. It’s constantly changing and constantly moving. A lot has happened in the last two years, so we worked together really hard work.”Worthy it is available on Tuesdays wherever books are sold.
