Jagdeep Kamboj Goldy is an Indian lawyer-turned-politician who was elected as the MLA for the Jalalabad Assembly constituency in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections under the name of Aam Aadmi Party.

Jagdeep Kamboj Goldy was born on Saturday, April 21, 1984 (38 years old as of 2022) from Jalalabad, Punjab, India. He received his Bachelor of Laws degree in 2010 from Maharaja Ganga Singh University, Bikaner, Rajasthan. Before entering politics, Jagdeep Kamboj worked as a lawyer and a farmer.

He is interested in joining politics as his father Surinder Kamboj contested from Jalalabad seat twice in the past. Surinder Kamboj is the Chairman of Punjab Agricultural Development Bank, Jalalabad. Surinder Kamboj was arrested in 2007 on suspicion of meat trade and several criminal cases were registered for rape and cheating at petrol pumps.

Indian National Congress (INC)

He entered politics through the Indian Youth Congress (IYC). Kamboj is the former general secretary of the All India Youth Congress. He also served as the chief of Jammu and Kashmir Youth Congress and Haryana Youth Congress. As a member of IYC, Jagdeep Kamboj actively participated in various protests. In 2018, he participated in protests in Delhi against the Modi government’s increase in petrol prices.

Kamboj wanted to contest the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections from Jalalabad Assembly constituency on the Indian National Congress ticket, but the party announced Ravneet Singh Bittu as its candidate at the time . When the Shahkot Assembly constituency called for a by-election following the death of Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Ajit Singh Kohar on February 4, 2018, Kamboj actively campaigned for the INC.

On September 23, 2019, Kamboj wrote to BV Srinivas (IYC Chairman), announcing his resignation as IYC National Secretary and his decision to quit the party. Kamboj parted ways with the INC, protesting against the allotment of the party ticket from Jalalabad constituency to Raminder Singh Awla from Guru Har Sahai parliamentary constituency instead of a Jalalabad native. Angered by the incident, Camboje decided to stand on the ballot as an independent candidate. On October 11, 2019, Punjab Congress Committee (PPCC) Chairman Sunil Jakhar said in a letter that Kamboj was expelled from the Congress for anti-party activities. The statement said that Kamboj is contesting in the 2019 Jalalabad Assembly by-election against Raminder Singh Awla, the official candidate of the Congress Party.

The Jalalabad Assembly seat was earlier represented by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, but it fell vacant after his election to the Lok Sabha. Hence, the seat was contested during the 2019 Punjab by-elections. Jagdeep Kamboj is contesting independently in the by-elections after Congress refused to vote for Jalalabad Assembly constituency. His election symbol was “a man driving a tractor” and his election slogan was “Neta Nahi Beta”.

He received 5,836 votes and lost the election. Congress candidate Raminder Singh Awla won the election defeating SAD candidate Raj Singh Dibbipura by 16,000 votes.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)

Kamboj joined the Aam Aadmi Party in February 2020. Subsequently, he was appointed as the state president of the AAP BC wing. In December 2021, the Aam Aadmi Party announced Jagdeep as its candidate for the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections from Jalalabad constituency. Jagdeep Kamboj won the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections from Jalalabad Assembly constituency on March 10, 2022, defeating Sukhbir Singh Badal by over 30,000 votes Badal). The defeat of Sukhbir Singh Badal was a significant event in the history of Jalalabad as Badal served as the legislator from this constituency three times.

Meanwhile, the AAP led by chief ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann won 92 out of 117 seats in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections and formed the first state government in Punjab.

Suspected of car theft

In 2007, Jagdeep Kamboj was detained by Chandigarh police on suspicion of car theft. A week before Jagdeep’s arrest, his father Surinder Kamboj was arrested on suspicion of prostitution. Later, two other associates of Surinder Kamboj were detained by the police. While Surinder Kamboj was remanded in police custody, the three others arrested along with him were sent to judicial custody. Inspector Vijay Kumar, in-charge of Chandigarh Police Operations Team, told the media that during the ongoing interrogation of Surinder Kamboj, the names of Jagdeep Kamboj and Sanjeev Chhabra cropped up . During the investigation, a stolen Hyundai Accent car, the seal of the Batala Registration and Licensing Authority and the fake registration certificate of the vehicle were recovered from Jagdeep.

Charged for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property (Section 420 IPC)

In July 2015, Jagdeep Kamboj was booked for allegedly cheating a villager named Resham Singh out of Rs 6.25 lakh. Kamboj had reportedly promised Resham Singh to remove the name of his son-in-law Surjit Singh from the FIR registered in the murder case. When Jagdeep failed to keep his promise, Resham asked him to return the money, but Jagdeep refused. Furthermore, during investigation, SSP Fazilka found that Jagdeep had cheated others as well.
