Jagroop Singh Gill began his political career in the 1970s by joining the Indian National Congress. In 1979, he was elected to the Bathinda Municipal Corporation for the first time. He subsequently won five consecutive elections and served as a councilor of the Bathinda Municipal Corporation in 1989, 1992, 1997, 2008 and 2015.
In 2021, he won his seventh consecutive victory from the District 1 District Council election. Bathinda ranked 48th with 414 votes. Jagroop Gill emerged as the frontrunner and main contender for the post of Mayor of Bathinda District Council with an absolute majority. However, he was ignored, which became the reason why Jaggrupp quit the Indian National Congress in August 2021.
He has also previously served as Chairman of Bathinda Improvement Trust, Chairman of Bathinda District Planning Committee, Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Civic Body and Chairman of the District Bar Association.
Jagroop Singh Gill joined the Aam Aadmi Party at the party office in Chandigarh on August 2, 2021, in the presence of Harpal Singh Cheema, Jarnail Singh, Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Baljinder Kaur and Rupinder Kaur Ruby.
Harpal Singh Cheema told a press conference that Jaggrupp’s joining AAP is a shot in the arm for the party in Malwa region. He said,

In 2022, he contested the Legislative Assembly elections from Bathinda City Assembly constituency on the Aam Aadmi Party banner. Jagroop won the election by defeating Manpreet Singh Badal (Congress candidate) by 63,581 votes.
After his victory, he addressed the media and said he would not play politics but work to strengthen the party. He also talked about changing the urban environment. He said,
My first priority is to rid Bathinda of gangsterism and drugs. After a period of gloom, there is now no place for gangsterism in Bathinda. Any hooliganism will be dealt with seriously. “
