Jalen Hurts Pays for Funeral of 18-Year-Old High School Football Player Who Died in Shooting

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and Houston native (25) promised to pay for the funeral expenses of Jarvon Coles, according to NFL.com reporter Ian Rapoport.

Coles, a standout student and captain of the football team at North Shore High School, was killed in a shooting at a house party in Humble, Texas on March 9.

According to Rapoport, the Eagles star heard about Coles’ death and wanted to help those in his former community.

Hurts played football at Channelview High School, where his father, Averion Hurts, was the head coach. Located on the east side of town, Channelview and North Shore were rivals, about five miles apart.

On March 9, deputies from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office were called to a rental home on Fieldwick Lane in Humble for concerns about underage drinking, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies said partygoers told them a young man was in the yard having a seizure, HCSO said, according to CBS affiliate KHOU-TV . While performing CPR on the man, they realized he had been shot in the chest, the station reported.

The youth, later identified by HCSO as Coles, was rushed to a local hospital where he died a short time later, authorities said.

On Saturday, hundreds of people attended Coles’ funeral at The Light of the World Christian Fellowship Church in Humble, Fox affiliate KRIV-TV reported.

Hurts sent a video message to Coles’ family, and he wasn’t the only public figure to pay tribute to the beloved student.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Houston Mayor John Whitmire declared March 16 “Jarvon Coles Day.”

“He was the type of person that everyone should aspire to be,” Domenique Mitchell, a family friend, told NBC affiliate KPRC-TV.
