Jamarcus Ellis, a former Westinghouse High School basketball player in Indiana, sadly lost his life in a car accident Friday morning, setting off a devastating chain of events. His family and friends are deeply saddened by the passing of a dear person who had a great impact on and off the basketball court after this tragic news. A vehicle incident on the West Side near the Pilsen area claimed the life of the 38-year-old former basketball star. His body sustained serious injuries when he crashed his car into a viaduct pillar.
Unfortunately, Ellis was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. Chicago mourned the death of a true basketball icon as police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office began investigating the crash. More than simply being a basketball player, Jamarcus Ellis was a legend, an inspiration to others and a representative of perseverance. Ellis reached a significant milestone in 2004 when the Sun-Times named him to its All-State first team. With this achievement, he joined the ranks of famous basketball personalities including former NBA player Shaun Livingston and current Duke head coach Jon Scheyer.
Elis, who was six feet five inches tall, was instrumental in leading Westinghouse to a city championship game victory his senior year. But his true basketball abilities came to light during his sophomore year when he not only contributed greatly to the team’s victory, but also helped the team win the city and state titles. After high school, Jamarcus Ellis, fondly called “Tone-Tone” in the Chicago area, continued to play basketball. Prior to playing for Indiana University during the 2007-2008 season, he played in junior college. His close friends called him “Tom-Tom”, affectionately. He showed his prowess as a basketball player at Oklahoma City University during his senior year of college.
