He was badly wounded in his right leg during the Battle of Anzio and was transported to 91st General Hospital in Clinton, Iowa. When he returned to the United States, his brother Peter visited him. After many marches, he was honorably discharged on January 29, 1945.
Arness began her broadcasting career in 1945, after being discharged from the army. Arness hitchhiked to Hollywood with the express purpose of working in the film industry. He played Peter Holstrom, brother of Loretta Young (Katie Holstrom), in the movie “The Farmer’s Daughter”.
