James Baldwin News
In a movie based on the life of the American novelist, critic, and activist, Billy Porter will play James Baldwin. The feature film will be co-produced by Byron Allen’s Media Group Pictures and the Pose actor. The screenplay by Porter and Dan McCabe will be based on James Baldwin: A Biography, published in 1994.
Porter, who is one Oscar away from being an Egot (an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony winner), has had this endeavour on his list of long-term artistic and personal goals. The 53-year-old Broadway veteran, who cited the civil rights activist and essayist during his historic 2019 Emmys acceptance speech, has long professed affection for and a connection to them.
In a statement, Porter stated, “As a Black queer guy on this earth with relative consciousness, I find myself, like James Baldwin said, “in a rage all the time.” “James was, so I am. Porter stated in a statement, “I stand on James Baldwin’s shoulders, and I plan to further his legacy for future generations.
Baldwin, who was born in Harlem in 1924, had widespread praise throughout his lifetime for a wide range of works, including theatre, poetry, essays, and novels, much of which focused on his experiences as a gay Black man in a segregated America.
Go Tell It on the Mountain, Notes of a Native Son, The Fire Next Time, Another Country, and Giovanni’s Room are a few of his notable books. His most well-known works, such as Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk and Raoul Peck’s documentary I Am Not Your Negro, have been made into feature films.
Billy Porter and Dan McCabe’s talent and devotion to enhancing James Baldwin’s legacy and achievements are invaluable and unparalleled for this unique and epic story,” Byron Allen, chairman and CEO of Allen Media Group, said in a statement. The Baldwin biopic will be co-produced by Porter’s Incognegro Productions and Allen. A director and other information are still pending announcement.
