James Gunn may already be working on more DC Universe plans for 2025, as the DC Studios boss gave a new update on potential projects in the reboot. Although biocommando TV shows will kick off the DC Universe release slate on Max later this week, with more movies and TV shows set to launch in 2025 and beyond. However, with Gunn taking the lead in the DC Universe after leaving Marvel Studios, a familiar element may make its way into DC Studios’ upcoming series.
Gunn recently asked his followers on Bluesky what they thought of the prospect of DC Studios using his work for a TV Christmas special. Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special For example, it was one of the last things he did for Marvel Studios before being hired as co-CEO of DC Studios. Without giving away any clues, Gunn specifically asked viewers which DC character they’d like to see host their own TV Christmas special, saying:
If DC Studios were to produce a TV Christmas special starring one or more of our DC characters (in the tradition of the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special), who would you want it to star?
What James Gunn’s DC Universe holiday special issue means for the series
While Gunn may not have listed any specific heroes or villains in his original post, it wouldn’t be surprising if DC Studios has already started working on various ideas for a DC Universe holiday special set to air in 2025. When any holiday special for DC Universe Chapter 1 was announced back in January 2023, Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran made it clear that the initially announced project was not the first to be released. 1 chapter in total, which means a holiday special may have been in development or filming.
The fact that Gunn is asking DC Universe viewers what character they think would make the perfect holiday special shows that DC Studios wants to hear from fans. Even if not every suggestion comes true, it’s a great way for fans to get involved with Gunn’s DC Universe in addition to seeing the actual product on the big and small screens. That said, it remains to be seen whether DC Studios will reveal any holiday specials they might have planned anytime soon.
Our Thoughts on James Gunn’s DCU Holiday Special Issue
The idea of a holiday special set in Gunn’s DC Universe would be another way for DC Studios to differentiate itself from the DCEU movie timeline, which never got the chance to explore the concept. With so many DC characters available to DC Studios in both live-action and animated versions, it would be very interesting to see some of them debut in a holiday special before heading into major DC Universe projects. Hopefully 2025 will reveal more about what plans Gunn and DC Studios may or may not have in terms of a DC Universe holiday special.
