Career
James began his career at The Village Voice, initially in the circulation department, making phone calls. He quickly got a job as a receptionist. After that, he started working as a writer for Esquire’s media and pop culture magazine. He then worked as a writer for Harper’s Magazine, The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books and New York Magazine.
Wolcott soon began working for Vanity Fair. He was hired at Vanity Fair by the late Leo Lerman, who was the magazine’s editor at the time. Wolcott’s debut book, The Catsitters, was published in 2001. He wrote “Attack Poodles and Other Media Mutants” in 2004, a critique of the right-wing media in the United States. Furthermore, he has just written the foreword to Geoffrey Beene’s next book, Identity. In October 2011, his book “Lucking Out: My Life Getting Down and Semi-Dirty in Seventies New York” was published.
Wolcott gave the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee 14 gifts between 2015 and 2016. He also contributed $200 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Wolcott received the 2014 “PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay” for Critical Mass.
