Jamie Lee Curtis shared a vulnerable yet powerful message by going makeup-free and stripping down for a magazine shoot more than two decades ago.
In 2002, the Oscar winner, 66, made the bold decision to pose for the cover More magazine without any make-up and wearing only a sports bra and underwear. In this week’s issue of PEOPLE, Curtis explains why “falling prey” to unrealistic beauty standards influenced her decision to strip for the photo shoot, which was also published without any retouching.
“I said, ‘I’ll do it if you take a picture of me with no makeup, no clothes, no styling, no hair, no nothing,'” says Curtis. “And then you make me all dressed up, made up, glamorous and say how much time it took, how much money it cost, how many people it took to make me look like that.”

In doing so, the actress wanted to show “the power of telling the truth.”
“I have been a vocal critic, and we will go to my grave with this, that there is a cosmeceutical industrial complex that tells women that they are not enough without these bulls— ideas about face augmentation, fillers, injections, facelifts, all the glamor these women do.”
She explains that everyone is “free to do whatever they want” when it comes to their appearance, but she hopes people can feel just as empowered without dressing up.

That’s why Curtis totally resonated with Pamela Anderson when she went makeup-free at Paris Fashion Week in September 2023.
“I started sobbing because this is exactly what we’re supposed to do,” Curtis said of Anderson, who inspired her to post a bare-faced selfie on Instagram on her 66th birthday last November. “I respect her so much for that,” adds the Halloween star.

Anderson, who continued to go bare-faced for the promotion The last showgirlwhich also stars Curtis, tells PEOPLE that she feels “spiritually” liberated since embracing her natural beauty in the public eye.
“I’ve always created characters in my personal life for protection or dressed up for other people to make them happy. I went back to my garden, peeled everything off, put on one of my sun hats and looked in the mirror and thought, ‘That’s good enough’.”
