Jamshed Jiji Irani

Jamshed J Irani (1936-2022) was an Indian industrialist, best known for his role as Managing Director (MD) of Tata Steel Limited. He died of natural causes on October 31, 2022, at Tata Memorial Hospital, Jamshedpur.

Jamshed Jiji Irani was born on Tuesday 2 June 1936 in Nagpur District, Central Province and Berar, British India (now Maharashtra, India Nagpur) at the age of 86. After completing his studies, he attended Nagpur Science College and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1956. In 1958, he studied for a master’s degree in geology and subsequently traveled to England, where he received a master’s degree in geology. Obtained a master’s degree in metallurgy from the University of Sheffield in 1960. After completing a master’s degree in metallurgy, he studied for and received a PhD in metallurgy at the University of Sheffield in 1963.

Profession

Jamshed J Irani began his career with the company in 1963 after completing his PhD in Metallurgy in the UK. Jamshed J Irani served as Senior Scientific Officer at the British Iron and Steel Research Association (BISRA) from 1963 to 1968. At BISRA, Jamshed was promoted and became the head of the Physical Metallurgy Department (PMD); however, according to multiple sources, Jamshed wanted to work for his country rather than a foreign country, so he decided to quit his job in the UK, He returned to India in 1968 and joined Tata Steel Company (TISCO), which was renamed Tata Steel Company Limited in 2005. There he served as Assistant to the Director of R&D until 1978, when he was promoted to General Director (GS) of TISCO. In 1979, Jamshed was once again promoted to general manager by Taiyuan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. In 1981, he became a member of the TISCO board of directors and remained there until 2011. Tata Steel once again promoted Jamshed and appointed him president of Taiyuan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. In 1988, Jamshed became the company’s joint managing director (JMD) and held that position until 1992, when he took over as general manager of TISCO. He served as general manager until his retirement in 2001. In 1993, the Tata Group granted Jamshed additional management rights of Tata Sons Private Limited and appointed him as a director. In the same year, the Tata Group appointed Jamshed to the board of directors of Tata Motors. Jamshed Jiji Irani retired from all roles held in the Tata Group in 2011.

Awards, Honors, Achievements

  • In 1997, Jamshid Jiji Irani was awarded the title of Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire by former Queen Elizabeth II.

Indian Iron Man passes away. It is with profound sadness that Tata Steel announces the passing of Padma Bhushan, Dr. Jamshed J Irani. He passed away on 31 October 2022 at 10 pm at TMH (Tata Main Hospital), Jamshedpur. The Tata Steel family extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. “
