Jane Lynch Says She Would 'Absolutely' Revisit Glee’s Sue Sylvester: It 'Was a Big Deal' (Exclusive)

joy fans aren’t alone — Jane Lynch would also love to know what Sue Sylvester is up to in 2024.

The 63-year-old actress, who played the antagonistic cheerleading coach in all six seasons of the Fox series, tells PEOPLE that she would “absolutely” be interested in revisiting her character, who stole the show whenever she was in the scene.

“It would be a lot of fun,” Lynch says during an interview at Harrah’s Resort SoCal, where hours earlier she had handed the keys to Funner, California to the city’s newest mayor, Martin Short.

“It’s a great character, and I think as she gets older, 10 years older than the finale, I think there’s more things to add. I think it would be really fun to play Sue Sylvester 10 years later,” she continues.

Joking that her character would be “completely unawakened”, Lynch says it would be “funny” to get some commentary from Sue Sylvester on current events. “She’d knock it down with….”

“That show is a big deal. The character was a big deal. All the characters were a big deal. It kind of hit the psyche of America,” she says of the show, which ended in 2015. “And it’s still alive, which is really nice.”

Recalling where fans last saw her acapella-hating character, Lynch says, “I was vice president of the United States, and the things that came out of my mouth — crazy things — [Donald] Trump said that.”

In the near decade since then joyfinale, the The wonderful Mrs. Maisel the star stayed in touch the most with Matthew Morrison, who played Glee club leader Will Schuester.

“He and I remained friends and every scene I got to do with him was just great,” she recalls. “And Iqbal Theba, and he was wonderful, the principal. And Dot-Marie Jones. Oh, my God. Those are the people I worked with the most and I just loved them.”

Although the cast doesn’t get together all that often, Lynch says, “Every time someone gets married, we have a reunion,” before praising former students Lea Michele and Darren Criss, who have reached even higher levels of fame since the series ended.

Lynch calls Criss, 37, “unstoppable” and praises Michele, 37, who “basically had a dream come true — and a dream about a show — with Fun girl.”

But on set, she says, the cast — which included Amber Riley, Dianna Agron, Kevin McHale, Chris Colfer and Jenna Ushkowitz, among others — was just like any other young actor.

“It’s funny. It’s not like they were singing while sitting in their chairs. You’d forget they were singers and performers. They were just on their phones like zombies,” Lynch recalls. “But they got along. They loved each other very much. And they’d go out—they’d sneak out to lunch and come back an hour later.”

It is impossible to talk about it joy but not touching upon the painful losses the cast faced. Cory Monteith died in 2013 of an overdose while filming the series, Mark Salling died by suicide in 2018, and Naya Rivera died of accidental drowning in 2020 while on a boat trip with her son.

“It’s amazing,” Lynch says. “Cory, Mark and Naya. Unbelievable. And they’re just gone.”
