Jane Seymour Says Dick Van Dyke Turned Her Local Grocery Store into 'His Stage' to Break into 'Song and Dance'

The actress recalled how Dick Van Dyke performed the show during a routine run to the grocery store

For Dick Van Dyke, the whole world is a stage, even the local supermarket.

During Thursday Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic in a CBS tribute special, Jane Seymour explained how she came across the Hollywood legend performing at her nearby store.

“I’d go to the local grocery store, pushing a cart, and I’d see Dick Van Dyke walking up to me,” she said. “Well, of course I wondered if it was really him, but then people would surround him, and he’d suddenly break into a little song and dance.”

Seymour continued: “I thought it was amazing. But anyway, I came back the next day, and he came back again, and I said, ‘What’s going on?’ And he said: ‘My wife always needs something. He sends me out every day.’ He loved it. He turned the supermarket into his stage.”

Van Dyke (98) and Seymour (72) starred in 2018. Buttons: A Christmas Story. The two friends were recently spotted together this Halloween, posing for a festive photo with theater star Amy Manford and musician William Joseph.

According to Seymour, The Dick Van Dyke Show star “is also, by the way, doing the most amazing Halloween haunted house you’ll ever see,” Seymour added. “It’s a full production. And I saw it a few weeks ago there, and my God, it was so cool.”

Ahead of his Dec. 13 birthday, Van Dyke revealed to PEOPLE one of his keys to staying physically and mentally sharp: hitting the gym three times a week, a practice his wife Arlene Silver strongly encourages.

“It’s so hard to work out, but I’m still doing all the moves and I think I’m in better shape than most of my peers who aren’t old,” he said. The star added that she still finds joy and gratitude “every day of my life.” “My wife brings me a cup of coffee in the morning.” I get it in bed. I’m treated like a king here,” he said, referring to his home in Southern California.

While Thursday’s special was joyous and bright, it also included some bittersweet moments, including when Van Dyke also acknowledged his grief for outliving longtime friends, including Norman Lear, who died Dec. 5 at age 101.

“I [once] he had a bunch of friends there to say nice things to,” he admitted, “but Mary Tyler Moore, Morey [Amsterdam] and [Rose Marie]Carl Reiner, Norman Lear — all the people I’ve always loved and hung out with are gone, so I have to make new friends.”

Fortunately, he doesn’t have to go far for that. “I’m happy to say that people are coming to me,” he added. “I don’t have to go looking.”
