Jasmine Bhambra is an Indo-Canadian woman who came into the spotlight in 2006 after her sister Manjit Panghali was murdered by Manjit’s husband Mukhtiar Panghali. Jasmine Bhambra became the spokesperson for Manjit’s family during court proceedings and media conferences. In 2007, she gained custody of Manjit and Mukhtiar’s youngest daughter, Maya, shortly after Mukhtiar Panghali was arrested on suspicion of murdering Manjit Panghali.

Manjit Pangali murder case

On October 18, 2006, Jasmine Bhambra’s sister Manjit Panghali disappeared after attending a prenatal yoga class in Surrey. Manjit was four months pregnant when she disappeared. Manjit’s husband Mukhtiar Panghali filed a missing person complaint 26 hours after Manjit went missing. Five days later, Manjit’s charred body was found beside the Delta Harbor causeway. In March 2007, Canadian police arrested Mukhtiar Panghali on charges of Manjit’s murder.

Shortly after Mukhtiar’s arrest, Manjit’s family and Mukhtiyar’s parents entered into a legal battle over custody of the couple’s only daughter, Maya. In 2007, the British Columbia Supreme Court awarded custody of Maya to Manjit’s sister, Jasmine Bhambra. Jasmine Bambra told a news conference that Maya’s custody battle was horrific and painful. She said,

Custody battles are scary and very painful, having to relive the trauma. It was so scary to see his face all the time. It was the most difficult time of my life. “

Jasmine further shared a dream she had during the same conversation the night before custody of Maya was awarded to her. she told,

I remember it very clearly. We stood in a circle holding hands, Maya sitting in the middle, and Manjit just said to me, ‘It’s okay. She is yours. We won.

Domestic Violence Program

To help victims of domestic violence in Canada, Jasmine Bhambra established a private scholarship fund in 2011 to focus on organizing various community groups in Canada while launching a program to assist victims of domestic violence. In a media chat, Jasmine expressed her hope that Manjit’s daughter Maya would take over the responsibility of the project when she grows up. She told,

I hope Maya can take over this when she grows up and maybe help victims of violent crime. “
