The 33-year-old sobbed as she admitted to the charges on Tuesday, ending a two-year criminal investigation that has drawn international attention. The Canadian socialite said: “I just want Henry’s family to have peace now and I want all of this behind us so we can all heal.” in a statement made out of court.
In May 2021, the body of 42-year-old Henry Jemmott was discovered floating in the water outside of San Pedro, Belize. His death was thought to be an “accident.” The defendant was to stand trial for his “accidental” murder.
Hartin told police they had been drinking together near the beach property he shared with his partner, Andrew Ashcroft, when he was shot once in the back of the head.
She claimed that the supervisor began to show her how to load and unload her Glock pistol while she massaged his shoulders.
In response to Hart’s request for an indication of sentencing, the court reportedly said that she was likely to receive a non-custodial sentence, which could be a fine or compensation payments to Mr. Jemmott’s family.
A court ruling is expected on May 31. Mr. Jemmott’s sisters and daughter, who were expecting his death trial to begin today, were present when he appeared in court.
Hartin’s plea left Jemmott’s family too distraught, and they initially appeared at the hearing wearing T-shirts with pictures of the victim. Before the trial, Hartin made several television appearances in which he claimed that he had accidentally shot Mr. Jemmott.
Hartin identified the victim, a father of five, as a friend, who said the gun went off when she tried to hand it to him, accidentally firing a bullet that struck the victim in the head.
