Jason Derulo reflects on the serious injury that nearly derailed his career — and could have cost him his life.
The singer, 35, suffered an acute vertebral fracture in January 2012 while rehearsing for his Future History World tour in Miami. In the end, he had to cancel the tour because his injury was so severe that it could paralyze him.
In a new episode of the podcast Great company with Jamie LaingDerulo recalled the moments leading up to the incident, saying he and his trainer did back pulls over and over again to build “stamina.”
“I slipped on one and jumped. And you should never run away. Even if you slip, you just have to keep going,” he said. “I pulled out, fell on my head and heard a bang. And I just said, ‘Oh s—. Like, is that it? F—.”

Teen with cystic fibrosis surprised by Jason Derulo’s private recording session: ‘Surreal and moving’
He continued: “I felt a huge heat in my neck and I was just thinking in my head like, ‘Holy shit, what just happened? Has my life just ended? Where am I?’”
Within seconds, Derulo was surrounded by people telling him not to move, as was protocol for a neck injury. But after five minutes I got her up, and my mom ended up taking him to the emergency room.
“My mom was in the car … and I’m holding my neck like this, it’s just innate, you know, it makes me feel safer,” he said. “I say, ‘Mom, I’m a little hurt inside. We’re just going to the hospital to double check.’ And I feel indescribable pain, but I don’t want her to know how bad my pain is.”
The “Talk Dirty” singer said every bump they hit on the drive to the hospital was “like hell on earth.” When he finally went to the doctor and had X-rays done, Derulo was told he had a hanging fracture, “which is the same fracture that happens when you hang yourself,” he explained.

Jason Derulo reveals son Jason King, 3, previews his music before releasing it: ‘They keep it real’
“This could have been a lot worse. You’ll be down for seven months. Kiss your tour goodbye,’ he recalled the doctor’s words. “I didn’t know what the rest of my life would look like. I didn’t know if I could take that time off. This was pretty early in my career … I was asking myself, ‘Have I maxed out?'”
The star said he eventually created a routine for himself to get through the recovery period, which included time on the treadmill and in the studio every day.
Derulo eventually made a full recovery. He released his fifth studio album Well, king in February 2024, and in November he and Jawsh 685 released the song “Make Me Happy”.
“With the new song, with ‘Make Me Happy,’ I just wanted to create a tonic for the world,” he said on the podcast. “I just felt this song was such a good record. That the vibe of the beat is so good and it feels really joyful.”
The star also teamed up with Nora Fatehi for the song “Snake,” which was released on Wednesday, January 15.
