Jason Mraz Reveals He Came Out Later in Life Because Being Gay Was a 'Punchline' in the '90s'

Despite being an outspoken bastion of pride today, Jason Mraz didn’t always feel comfortable enough to share his sexuality with the world due to the societal pressures that existed when he was younger.

During a conversation with Jesse Tyler Ferguson at the actor’s Dinner is on me podcast, the 48-year-old “I’m Yours” singer touched on his reluctance to come out as a teenager.

“In the 90s, being gay was like [the] the punch line of the joke. and I didn’t want to be the point of the joke,” the singer shared, adding that he ultimately decided to keep his “nose down” at the time to figure out “ways that I could go out and see the world one day instead.”

Mraz also touched on how growing up in Virginia also took a toll on his thought process regarding his sexuality at the time.

“I still carried with me the conservative street I grew up on, which was very difficult to ignore or escape from,” he noted. “I was very shy and afraid of what my family would say, or what my hometown would think or just anything.”

Although he emphasized his fear of being judged by the environment, Mraz added that he does not want to “throw anyone under the bus because my parents are a great support. I love them very much.”

In the 2018 interview BoardMraz revealed that he had sexual experiences with men, even while dating Christina Carano, whom he married in 2015 and eventually divorced in 2023. In the time since publicly identifying as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Mraz has remained open about his sexuality. and a journey towards further self-discovery.

“Yes, yes. My experiences are few, while other people my age could be more experienced, that’s all,” Mraz told Ferguson his thinking.

Although his experiences began at an older age, the singer remained optimistic, telling the host of the podcast i Modern family star, “I feel like my life is just beginning.”

“I can’t say that I have found love yet,” Mraz explained further, noting that “he was in great relationships and I was always learning and growing.”

“I love where I am and I finally feel so much love for myself that it can only make the next relationship better,” he added, “when I find it.”
