Narayan Rana, an ITBP officer, Jaspal became interested in the sport when he was surrounded by troops and guns. With his father as his first trainer, Jaspar began training with rifles and pistols, but he eventually chose pistols as his sport. In 1988, 12-year-old Jaspal made his debut at the 31st National Shooting Championship in Ahmedabad and won a silver medal. In 1994, he made his debut at the 46th World Shooting Championships in Milan, Italy, and set a scoring record in the competition. During the competition, Jaspal set a record of 590 points in the 25-meter center fire pistol event. He achieved the same feat again in 1995 at Coimbatore and again during the 1997 National Championships at Bangalore. dispute
- In 2019, Jaspal Rana found himself embroiled in a controversy when a case was filed against the government over the list of Dronacharya winners at the 2019 awards ceremony. The plea was filed by lawyer Rahul Mehra, representing the association, who asked the court to direct the government to reconsider the list and add Jaspal Rana’s name to it in the list. Mehra was asked to withdraw the request as it was not made by Jaspal Rana, who was in Rio de Janeiro for the World Cup. Mehra told the court that Jaspal Rana will send a copy of the vakalatnaama by Monday. He told the court that Jaspal had produced several award-winning athletes such as Manu Bhaker, Saurabh Chaudhry, Arjun Singh, Dwansh Rana and others.
- In 2021, the Indian shooting team performed poorly in the 10m air pistol and mixed team shooting events. Randhir Singh, president of the National Rifle Association of India, has publicly stated that Jaspal Rana is a negative factor in the team. Indian Olympian Manu Bhaker also backed his statement and said Jaspal Rana was the reason for her poor performance as he did not give her enough time during training. Jaspal responded to the accusations in an interview, saying:
Those who represent and run the sport in this country should stop manipulating and blaming others. NRAI can blame me. Everyone can blame me. But is that the only thing that happens? Are they saying that India’s poor performance at the Olympics has nothing to do with them? “
- During the Tokyo Olympics qualifiers, Jaspal Rana suggested that Chinki Yadav should compete in the 25m pistol event, while Manu should focus on the 10m event instead of participating in all events. Jasper said –
Which shooter in the world competes in three different events? It’s an extra burden on Manu, even if you look at last year’s results, Chinki beat Manu in almost every event in the 25m sporting pistol event. Yes, I support Chinki because as a coach I can see the merit. Chinki deserved a spot in the Olympic lineup in the 25m Sport Pistol category, but we let her down. I can definitely say that if Manu only competed in the 10m air pistol and 10m mixed team events in Tokyo, she would definitely take home a medal. Athletes must know where to focus and how to work to their strengths. “
- Jaspal and Manu parted ways months ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after the pair clashed. Manu complained that Jaspal, as a coach, did not pay much attention to her during training. Things went too far when Jaspal Rana wore a T-shirt with a message from Manu’s mother Sumedha printed on the back. Jaspal Rana further added –
It’s unfortunate that after working so hard for your sport, things like this happen to people. Yes, I did post this message, but if it came from Manu’s mother, she would not have any right to criticize the national team coach. I have to get it out so they remember what they’re doing. Remember, I never put anyone’s name on the message (on my t-shirt). “
