Jay Slater fled Airbnb feeling SCARED after admitting stealing £12k Rolex, claims ex-Maddie investigator in search shock

JAY Slater left the Airbnb he went to with two men who felt “scared” after they admitted stealing a £12,000 Rolex, an investigator has claimed.

Former detective Mark Williams-Thomas said the 19-year-old did not want to return to the remote holiday spot in north-west Tenerife despite his phone’s low battery.

Apprentice bricklayer Jay, who had been at a rave all night in Playa de las Americas, traveled north to an Airbnb in the village of Masca in the early hours of June 17.

During the hour-long drive, Mark claims Jay posted a Snapchat saying he had taken a £12,000 Rolex from an unknown person.

Police were reviewing security cameras at the beach club and speaking with witnesses about the alleged theft of the Rolex in the hours before Jay went missing.

A brawl was reported to have broken out at the Papagayo Beach Club in the early hours of June 17 after an expensive watch was allegedly stolen from a “large” Eastern European man.

Mark said he and his team “couldn’t confirm” Jay’s request on Snapchat “in terms of reported theft.”

He added: “However, Jay’s friends said he wasn’t going to make it up and the watch was the subject of a later conversation between friends.”

Former police officer Mark – who worked on the Madeleine McCann case – said that while Jay was at the Airbnb, called Casa Abuela Tina, he contacted friends through social media.

It included a Snapchat picture he sent to cottage friends of him holding a cigarette at 7.30am.

A picture emerged today of a man renting out an Airbnb for £40 a night.

Ayub Abdul paid £120 for a remote holiday in the Rural de Teno Park for three days.

According to Mark, the Airbnb host told Jay around 8 a.m. that a bus would arrive two hours later.

Jay then attempted to return to his holiday accommodation, facing an 11 hour walk.

The owner of Casa Abuela Tina said last week that she saw Jay walking alone up a hill in a vast mountain area near Masca the morning he disappeared.

Mark – who worked on the Madeleine McCann case – said Jay had spoken to at least three friends via text and phone on his way back, telling them he was lost.

At around 8.50am he made one last frantic call to his friend Lucy, saying he was in the “middle of nowhere” with no water and only one per cent of battery on his phone.

Mark said in a video update today: “Two people told him to go back to the rental.

“He said he couldn’t do it and he had already been walking for 30 minutes and now he had turned off the road and was walking on a path where there were stones.”

Jay, however, sent his location at both 8.49am and 8.50am to friends, showing him on a hiking trail in the desolate Rural de Teno Park.

The battery on the teenager’s phone died then, and no one has seen or heard from him since.

Mark claimed that Jay had run away from his holiday and was “scared”.

He said: “We have received information to suggest that Jay left the rental flat in fear and did not want to return to the rental flat, even though that would have been the most sensible course of action, and also where he could have charged his phone, got some water and got in touch with friends.

“We continue to investigate this aspect.”

The two men Jay was with in the final hours before he disappeared spoke to police on the island before returning to the UK.

Spanish police consider them “irrelevant” to the investigation.

Mark, who helped expose Jimmy Savile, flew to Tenerife a week after Jay disappeared as he wanted to help his devastated family get answers.

Although not part of the official investigation, Mark has been conducting his own investigation and said today that he and his team believe there is no third party involved in Jay’s disappearance.

He said: “However, we have ruled out a hostage or kidnapping situation as no credible ransom demand has been made.

“At this stage we have no evidence to say that there was a third party involved in Jay’s disappearance.”

Mark said he still has a number of questions to look into, so he’s keeping an “open mind”.

It came after a Spanish judge on Monday found there was “no immediate evidence of criminality” in the case.

Many believed that Jay could have been kidnapped or killed by a criminal group in the mountains.

But investigating judge Maria Goya, who is being briefed by the police on developments, the Civil Guard said there was nothing to suggest that Jay was the victim of a crime.

Officers on the island called off a massive search operation for Jay on Sunday, in a major blow to his devastated family.

On Tuesday, however, two plainclothes policemen searched the Airbnb apartment again.

Detectives spent two hours combing the sea in the northwest of the island.

Jay’s heartbroken family said “words cannot describe the agony” after the search was suddenly called off less than two weeks into the search.

Mum Debbie Duncan said in a heartbreaking statement “we just want to find him” after the family vowed to keep looking.

Her emotional message read: “Jay is a normal lad who is in his third year as an apprentice and is a very popular young man with a large circle of friends.

“We are a very close family and we are completely devastated by his disappearance. Words cannot describe the pain and agony we are experiencing.

“He is our beautiful boy who has his whole life ahead of him and we just want to find him.

“We have no information on his whereabouts.”

Parents Debbie and Warren, as well as brother Zak, are all in Tenerife still looking for answers about what happened to Jay.
