Jay Slater’s best friend says he heard him ‘slipping on rocks’ in bombshell last video call with teen before he vanished

JAYA Slater’s best friend said he could hear the missing teenager skating on rocks during the last video call.

The 19-year-old called his friend Brad – who he was on holiday with in Tenerife – after he got lost last Monday morning.

Jay, Brad and friend Lucy Mae flew to the island earlier this month to enjoy the three-day NRG festival.

After going to a rave that ended in the early hours of June 17, apprentice bricklayer Jay headed to Masca with two Brits he met that night.

He shared the last Snapchat from their Airbnb with his hand holding a cigarette at 7.30am.

Jay then tried to make his way back to his holiday accommodation – an 11 hour walk away.

But at around 8.50am he made a desperate call to his friend Lucy saying he was lost in the “middle of nowhere” and only had one per cent of battery on his phone.

Jay also said he cut his leg on a cactus and needed water.

It is not clear whether the call to Brad was separate from the one to Lucy.

Now Jay’s pal Brad has opened up about their latest conversation – saying Jay was initially unconcerned about returning to their accommodation.

He told Isla Traquair on ITV’s This Morning that he could hear Jay’s feet skidding on the rocks – signaling him to veer off the road.

Brad said, “That’s how I knew he went off the road because, you know, when you’re walking on gravel, or whatever, you can… you know what I mean, rocks.”

However, he admitted he wasn’t worried at the time as Jay assured him he was fine – but told his friend to put in his location.

Brad added: “We were both, like, laughing about it. He said, ‘look where I’m at.’

He said Jay then hung up because he had another call on hold – but promised to return the phone.

Both Brad and his mum Rachel Hargreaves have vowed to stay in Tenerife “as long as necessary” to support Jay’s distraught family.

Officers on the island are now planning a massive search for Jay tomorrow and have called for volunteers to take part – despite British police refusing help.

It comes as…

Authorities on the island claimed last week that they had the resources needed for the hunt.

Officials say a major all-out search will take place in Masca tomorrow from 9am.

Police have confirmed they are not looking for “general” inexperienced members of the public to join the search.

Instead, they seek the help of those who are experts in dealing with rocky terrain, as well as professional volunteers such as firefighters.

Their cry for help comes despite refusing help from their British counterparts as they insist they have all the resources they need.

Tenerife police said today: “The Guardia Civil is preparing and coordinating a major search to find a young British man missing in the village of Masca.

“We are looking for the cooperation of all these voluntary associations: Civil Protection, firefighters, etc., and even private volunteers who are experts in sudden search terrains.

“An extensive search will be conducted on Saturday, June 29 from 9am.”

Jay’s distraught mum Debbie Duncan slammed police on the island last week for not allowing officers from Lancashire Constabulary to fly out to help search for her son.

She said: “I know the Spanish police mean well, but the problem we have is the language barrier, we just don’t seem to be being spoken to. I’m sure they’re doing their best.

“They told me they used dogs and drones and then they said Lancashire Police offered their resources but they turned it down but I think it would really help.

“I would feel happier if our people were overly helpful. It’s so hard not knowing where he is, the area and the terrain is rough, but the police said there are too many people up there now and it could interfere with their investigation.”

On Tuesday, police officers on the island were forced to call in reinforcements with specialist sniffer dog teams.

Rescue teams focused much of their search on a 2,000-foot chasm in the desolate Rural de Teno Park.

Now they focused on the caves near Los Carrizales—about an hour and a half’s walk from the Airbnb where Jay had gone with the two men.

Los Carrizales is a small village not far from Masca in the Teno mountains.

But police sources warned that it was “highly unlikely that Jay would have survived if he got lost in the mountains”.

Still, authorities said there were no plans to call off the search yet, despite no sign of Jay.
