Jaya Verma Sinha is a 1986 batch Indian Railway Transport Officer. After the tragic accident in Balasore, she attracted attention by addressing the media on behalf of the Indian Railways and explaining the complex signaling system of the railways. In March 2018, she made history when she became the first woman to be elected as Chief Operations Manager of South Eastern Railway. In August 2023, she was appointed CEO and Chairman of the Railway Board, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the 118-year history of Indian Railways.

Jaya Verma Sinha, also spelled Jaya Varma Sinha, was born on Wednesday, 18 September 1963 (age 60; as of 2023) in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh (now Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh). Her zodiac sign is Virgo. Her ancestral home is located in the Baghambari housing scheme in Alapur. She studied at St. Mary’s Convent International College, Allahabad, from 1978 to 1982. She then attended Allahabad University in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, for her bachelor’s degree. (PCM). Thereafter, she pursued postgraduate studies in psychology at Allahabad University. She has been a bright student since childhood. In 1986, she passed the UPSC Civil Services Examination and joined the Indian Railway Transport Service (IRTS). In 2015, Jaya studied at the SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan, Italy, where she studied advanced management and advanced management courses. She also studied for a Certificate in Public Policy Economics at the University of Oxford, UK.

Jaya Verma Sinha joined the Indian Railway Transport Service (IRTS) in 1988. In 1990, she was appointed as Assistant Zonal Manager, Kanpur Zone, Northern Railways. She worked in this position for about a year and was then promoted as Divisional Commercial Manager, Allahabad Division of Northern Railways. After working there for about two years, she started working as a Senior Transport Manager at the Center for Railway Electrification (CORE), Ranchi, Jharkhand. In 1995, Jaya was appointed as Divisional Operations Manager of Allahabad Division of Northern Railway. She worked there for about a year.

From 1996 to 2000, Jaya served as Senior Divisional Operations Manager, Northern Railways, Delhi Division. In 2000, she began working as Deputy General Project Manager for Northern Rail’s Freight Operations Information System (FOIS). She served in this position for 5 years and was appointed Railway Advisor to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2007. During his four years as a railway consultant, Jaya played a vital role in the launch of the Maitree Express train from Kolkata to Dhaka. In 2011, Jaya was appointed as the Chief Vigilance Officer of Northern Railway, New Delhi and worked there for about a year. Thereafter, Jaya served as Divisional Railway Manager, Sealdah, Calcutta Eastern Railway for two years. From 2016 to 2018, Jaya served as Senior Deputy General Manager, South Eastern Railway, Garden Reach, Kolkata, West Bengal. In March 2018, Jaya was appointed Chief Operations Manager of South Eastern Railway, becoming the first woman to hold the position. She subsequently took up the role of Chief Commercial Manager at Northern Railway in June 2020, a position she held until January 2023.

In August 2021, he was transferred to the Ministry of Railways and served as a transportation consultant and transportation supplementary. During her tenure, she was responsible for the overall transportation of Indian Railways freight and passenger services, which reportedly recorded record growth of over 20% and crossed the 1.5 billion tonnes mark of freight traffic per annum. Later, she was tasked with achieving the national transport company’s freight target of 2 billion tons in the coming years. In January 2023, she became the Member, Operations and Business Development, Railway Board, Ministry of Railways, Government of India.

As a railway board member, Jaya became the face of Indian Railways during the tragic Balasore accident that killed nearly 300 people and explained the complex signaling system of Indian Railways to the media. On August 31, 2023, Jaya Verma Sinha created history by being appointed as the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Railway Board, becoming the first woman to hold the position since the establishment of the Indian Railway Commission. She takes charge of the office on September 1, 2023, succeeding Anil Kumar Lahoti. Although she is expected to retire on October 1, 2023, she will be rehired on the day of retirement until August 31, 2024.
