JD Davison News
The Celtics waited impatiently until after midnight to make their 2022 NAB pick, selecting JD Davison, a 19-year-old prospect from Alabama. Davison, ranked No. 49 by Kevin O’Connor for The Ringer, is an excellent player who simply needs to improve his decision making to play even better.
Davison made the SEC All-Freshman team despite playing in only six games at this stage last year, averaging 8.5 points, 4.3 assists and 4.8 rebounds for the Crimson Tide. However, the 6-foot-3, 195-pound player showed a penchant for big plays, posting two games with at least 10 assists and 10 rebounds.
Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens praised and admired Davison for the type of player he is. Stevens described him as a person full of energy and pushed him to act. He added that Davison can play the racket and has the talent to do so, but there are still some areas where he needs to improve. However, he is a fierce opponent.
The Celtics gave up their first-round pick to San Antonio as part of the deal that brought them Derrick White at the trade deadline, leaving them with just one option on Thursday. For the second year in a row, Boston had a hard time making the first choice. Even though Davison didn’t seem like a good fit for the Celtics during the pre-draft process, they continued to pursue him throughout the season. He also represented the type of player who doesn’t need to contribute right away.
Stevens praised Davison as an excellent team player who will strengthen the group with all his talent. Davison has the ability to fight for minutes like everyone else, but he also has the ability to grow, change and focus on getting better.
