When a sinkhole appeared under Jeff Bush’s home in Seffner, Florida, he was dozing off. According to The Guardian, the opening was about 6 meters (20 feet) wide and deep. His brother Jeremy and Jeremy’s partner, Rachel, could hear him from the other room.
At this point, Rachel told ABC Action News, “We heard Jeff scream.” We went in the door after running down the hall, I turned on the light and all we saw was a big hole. Jeff already left.
A Hillsborough County police officer had to carry Jeremy to safety after he dove into the hole to try to save his brother as the ground collapsed around him.
“I didn’t care that the floor was still giving way and the floor was falling down. According to Jeremy, I wanted to save my brother. But I couldn’t do anything.”
I swear I heard him call me to help him. Bush’s body was swallowed down a sinkhole along with the bedroom furniture, and rescuers were unable to find it. The engineers decided the next day that it was too risky to try to rescue someone from the house or the land, so they destroyed it, filling the hole with gravel. A few years later, at the site, which was now closed to visitors, the sinkhole was reopened.
Florida, which has a lot of limestone, is especially prone to sinkholes.
The US Geological Survey explains that sinkholes are most common in “karst terrain,” as geologists call them. These are areas where many types of rocks below the ground surface can be dissolved spontaneously by groundwater passing through them. Gypsum, limestone, and other carbonate rocks are examples of soluble rocks, along with salt domes and beds.
The caves remain below the surface when the underlying rock melts. A sinkhole forms when an unstable surface collapses into a cavern. It ranges in size from extremely small to the massive structures seen at Xiaozhai Tiankeng, also called the Xiaozhai Heavenly Pit. The world’s largest supposed sinkhole is said to be 662 meters (1,667-2,172 feet) deep and 537 meters (1,762 feet) wide.
