On Saturday, September 3, Jeff German, a veteran investigative reporter for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, was found murdered and brutally stabbed many times outside his house. The accused suspect in the killing of the reporter is being sought by police. Dori Koren, a spokeswoman for the Las Vegas Police Department, told reporters:
“We suspect the altercation occurred outside the residence.” We have a few leads. We are looking for a suspect, but he is still at large.”
After receiving 911 calls, authorities swiftly went to the crime site. It is thought that Jeff German, 69, was involved in a dispute with another individual, which resulted in the stabbing.
In a statement, Executive Editor Glenn Cook said:
“Jeff’s death has saddened the Review-Journal family. He was the gold standard in the journalism industry. It’s difficult to image Las Vegas now without his many years of casting a bright light on dark areas.”
Jeff German apparently received no death threats prior to his murder.
In a statement, Glenn Cook stated that German had not alerted newspaper management of any threats made against him or voiced any concerns about his safety. The Las Vegas police department said that this investigation was their top priority. In a statement, they stated:
“On Saturday, the LVMPD implemented its big case procedure in the murder investigation.” This pulls together a range of resources in order to optimize the investigation effort and provide a feeling of urgency to the suspect’s capture.”
Jeff German spent almost 30 years of his life as an investigative journalist. He worked for the Las Vegas Sun as a writer and reporter, covering government, labor, politics, and organized crime. In 2010, he transferred to the Review-Journal. German was well-known for her coverage of political scandals, government corruption stories, and the 2017 mass shooting at a music festival, which killed 60 people and wounded over 400. German was a journalist who covered gaming corruption, extremist activities in southern Nevada, and organized crime, according to his former coworkers.
Carolyn G. Goodman, Mayor of Las Vegas, expressed her deep thoughts on her social media account, writing:
“I was shocked to read of the death of Jeff German, a long-time Las Vegas writer. This was a heinous act of brutality. Deaths in this manner are always terrible and must be avoided. The police probe will be constantly monitored by us.”
The Nevada Attorney General’s office also expressed their sympathies on Jeff German’s passing. They said,
For decades, Jeff German spoke truth to power in the Silver State. This is a horrible, senseless tragedy.
AG @AaronDFordNV and the entire OAG send their love to Jeff’s colleagues at the @reviewjournal. https://t.co/RVA6queSAo

Jeff German’s reporting covers a broad variety of sensitive and vital issues, including the 2017 mass shooting at the Mandalay Bay hotel and municipal inspection standards. His last piece was about a legal struggle between travel companies and hotel room taxes that the Nevada Supreme Court was hearing about. German, the heir to the Horseshoe Club fortune, published Murder in Sin City: The Death of a Las Vegas Casino Boss in 2001.
