Jeffrey Donovan Leaving Law & Order Ahead of Season 23

Jeffrey Donovan is moving away from Law and order.

The actor who played Detective Frank Cosgrove on the show will not return for Season 23, PEOPLE has confirmed.

Donovan (55) took on the lead detective role in the 21st and 22nd seasons of the series. His last episode was the season 22 finale, in which he was arrested for the assassination of a US senator. Thirteen new episodes of the series should be broadcast during 2024.

Donovan did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Law and orderRecent seasons serve as reboots of the classic legal drama that aired from 1990 to 2010. Season 21 arrived 12 years later with a 2022 premiere and some new additions to the legal team. Donovan shared the screen with Mehcad Brooks, Sam Waterston, Hugh Dancy, Camryn Manheim, Odelya Halevi and Anthony Anderson, who left his legacy role as Det. Kevin Bernard after season 21.

Anderson has previously spoken about his excitement to join the revival — even inviting series creator Dick Wolf to reprise the role. I said, ‘Well, you know, I’ve been a free agent since November 19th,'” said Anderson Fr Negro ending in 2022 “I [Dick] it was like, ‘Anthony, you have no idea how happy this phone call makes me.'”

Although his time on Law and order he figured Donovan was no stranger to the TV courtroom. He starred in crime series in the 2000s Notice of burning as the sarcastic Michael Weston, and appeared as a defense attorney on Netflix Extremely evil, shockingly evil and disgusting — a dramatization of the life of serial killer Ted Bundy.
