Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck call it quits again.
On Tuesday, Aug. 20, Lopez, 55, filed for divorce from Affleck, 52, more than two years after the couple tied the knot in July 2022, multiple sources confirm to PEOPLE. TMZ first broke the news.
Lopez filed the petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court and listed April 26, 2024 as the separation date. She filed for divorce on her own without using a lawyer and is technically representing herself. Although they tied the knot in Las Vegas on July 17, 2022, August 20 marked the second anniversary of their traditional Georgia wedding ceremony.
The singer has not said if there is a prenuptial agreement, and sources told TMZ there is none.
“She was really trying to make things work and she’s heartbroken,” a source told PEOPLE of Lopez. “Children are the top priority, as they always have been.”

Lopez and Affleck famously rekindled their romance in 2021, more than 17 years after they originally got engaged and postponed their planned September 2003 wedding. The couple first officially broke up in January 2004 and have remained friendly for the past decade.

PEOPLE first reported in April 2021 that the musician and the Oscar-winning director were spending time together again following Lopez’s divorce from former MLB star Alex Rodriguez. Lopez and Affleck later became Instagram official in July of that year and returned to the red carpet at the 2021 Venice Film Festival together.

Lopez’s rep confirmed that she and Affleck got engaged in April 2022, and the couple held a surprise wedding in Las Vegas on July 17, 2022. They later held a larger wedding ceremony in Georgia at Affleck’s 87-acre estate outside Savannah in August of that year , with Matt Damon, Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, Hollywood talent agent Patrick Whitesell among the attendees. Podcaster and life coach Jay Shetty officiated Lopez and Affleck’s ceremony.

The singer and actress shares twins Max and Emma, 16, with Marc Anthony, whom she was married to from 2004 to 2014. Affleck, who was previously married to Jennifer Garner from 2005 to 2018, has three children with Garner: Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12.
The pair recently collaborated on Lopez’s Prime Video music documentary This is me… now: a love storywhich accompanied the release of her self-titled album in February. Rumors of the couple’s marital problems began circulating in May after they spent some time apart while Lopez promoted her film Satinattended the 2024 Met Gala and prepared for her 2024 nationwide tour, while Affleck stayed in Los Angeles to film his movie Accountant 2.
Multiple sources told PEOPLE in May that Affleck and Lopez do not live together in their Los Angeles home. Although the pair were seen together at various events in the spring, a source said their different personalities and approaches to public life “were difficult from day to day.”
Before filing for divorce, Lopez and Affleck spent most of the summer on opposite coasts of the country; Lopez spent July 4, the couple’s second wedding anniversary and her 55th birthday, during an extended stay in the Hamptons in New York, while Affleck stayed in Los Angeles for most of the summer.
In June, Affleck and Lopez put the Beverly Hills mansion they’ve shared together since June 2023 on the market, a source previously told PEOPLE. Affleck later bought a new $20 million home in Los Angeles in July.
After Lopez returned to LA in August, a source told PEOPLE that she “hasn’t seen Ben in weeks” and that the couple is “moving on apart.”
