Before she confirmed her return to I know what you did last summer reboot on Friday, December 13, Jennifer Love Hewitt had a special moment rewatching the classic slasher with her family.
The actress, 45, tells PEOPLE that she recently saw the 1997 film — in which she plays Julie James’ last girlfriend — at the theater with her two oldest children: daughter Autumn, 11, and son Atticus, 9.
“They’re horror people, so they wanted to see it,” Hewitt says. “It was so crazy to see myself at 18. I look so much like my daughter, it’s crazy.”
Their verdict? “They loved it,” she says. “They were like, ‘Mom, this is so crazy. This is so cool.’ It was fun to go back and reminisce about the things that happened during that movie and share it with them. It’s so surreal to sit with my kids and see myself as a kid.”
Hewitt says her youngest child, her three-year-old son Aidan, has since seen her 2004 film. Garfield: The Movie, “what he likes.”

The I know what you did last summer The reboot is set to hit theaters in the summer of 2025, and in addition to Hewitt, features a stellar young cast that includes Madelyn Cline, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Jonah Hauer-King, Lola Tung, Chase Sui Wonders and Sarah Pidgeon.
“My daughter wants me to be in it so she can meet the young girls who are in the movie now, because she’s drifted away from me,” Hewitt says. “I’m not the most exciting. She said, ‘I want to meet other girls.’ So yeah, now I have to do it for my kids.”

As for her advice for young peers in rebooting, Hewitt says it’s “just to have fun.”
“It’s so much fun to be in a horror movie,” she says. “It’s such a different acting process than anything else because you can be big and crazy and fun. I hope for those girls that one day they’re 45 and their kids are sitting in the theater watching it with them and I think are cool and feel just as good as part of the franchise, I think they’re going to smash it.”

Hewitt’s I know what you did last summer casting news rounded off an already monumental 2024, in which the star released her new book, Inheriting Magic: My Journey Through Grief, Joy, Celebration, and Making Each Day Magical, and a new Lifetime Christmas movie Holiday addict (also starring her husband Brian Hallisay). She also recorded the eighth season 9-1-1 (which returns to ABC on March 6).
“When I sat down for my 2024 vision, this is what I wanted,” she says. “I wanted all these things to happen. I can be a mom and the person that people have known me to be for a long time, but changing it in a way that both come together. So I’m feeling very excited and super grateful.”
