Jenas revealed he was axed by the BBC on Monday while on a family holiday with his wife Ellie and their three children.

After being fired, Jenas – in a harrowing online meeting with HR and senior corporate executives – showed a series of X-marked messages he had sent to two colleagues on The One Show.

During his escape to Marbella, Spain, Jenas described taking part in the call as “pretty hellish”.

Jenas said: “It was just a grim situation. You have to sit there and listen to what you said. I’m not proud of anything.

“It’s embarrassing, and apparently there are four people on the Zoom call, just listening to all this and reading my messages. I think I was in shock then, it was a lot to process.

“But I’m married, I’m to blame, and I kind of played that blame game in my head.

“The main panic was that I could lose my family.

“There is something in me that prays that there is some level of mercy or understanding of the fact that we are human beings and we all make mistakes, some more than others, and mine is a big mistake.

“But that didn’t happen, and yeah, the whole situation was pretty hellish – and I’m not quite sure what I’m feeling right now, but I don’t think I’ve ever been lower.”

However, the defiant former football star, who is considering suing the BBC over their handling of the crisis, insists: “I did nothing illegal – these were inappropriate messages between two consenting adults.”

While the doctor referred Jenas to a therapist, he fears that his two oldest daughters – who are 11 and 16 – could become victims of bullying because of his antics.

Jenas said: “There were difficult conversations with my 16-year-old and my 11-year-old.

“Obviously, they are at an age where they are aware of social media and other little things. That was difficult.

“I let everyone down. When you have kids, man. Even my dog gave me a disappointed look.

“But with the kids, I think this is where I’m hoping the help will help me.

“There are certain times where I’m doing certain things when it’s just a complete, almost blackout of what I’m doing and I can’t act like that.

“Basically, I can’t risk my life that much.”

Praising Ellie as an “amazing mother”, he said she was solely focused on looking after their two daughters and young son.

Jenas explained: “Right now it’s just about the kids. It’s school holidays and they are trapped in the house because there are photographers outside my house.

“They say, ‘What’s going on, Dad?’ It is difficult.”

He added: “I have to take responsibility and I have apologized to them all.

“I don’t know what to say about that, to be honest with you.

“The kids are having a hard time at home right now. My wife is real.”

Jenas, who also has a teenage daughter from a previous relationship, said Ellie kicked him out of the bedroom the couple share in their £1 million home in Hertfordshire.

He added: “I had to say [Ellie] until Monday night because that’s when I knew I was fired.

“I just said, ‘I’ve been sacked from the BBC’.

“She said ‘Why?’ and I said ‘For sending messages that were inappropriate for two girls’.

“Ellie is absolutely furious. She is human.

“Since then, we haven’t really talked properly. She is absolutely furious.”
