Jesse Louise Jackson Sr. was born on October 8, 1941 in Greenville, South Carolina, United States. He graduated from Sterling High School and then attended the University of Illinois before transferring to A&T University in Greensboro, North Carolina.

During this time, he participated in local civil rights protests against segregated theatres, libraries and restaurants. He earned a degree in sociology and began working full-time with the Civil Rights Movement in 1966.

Career

He started attracting attention when he started working for Martin Luther King Jr. He rose to fame working for Martin Luther King Jr.’s SCLC. He was actively involved in civil rights movements in which he participated or played a role.

Jackson is a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and oversees the Chicago chapter of SCLC’s economic arm, Operation Breadbasket. He was later elevated to the position of country director. In Washington, DC, he helped with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s Crusade for the Poor.

The PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) campaign began in December 1971, and Jackson later renamed it People United to Serve Humanity. In 1984, he resigned as president of PUSH to run for president of the Democratic Party. That same year, he founded the Rainbow Alliance. However, in 1996, the two organizations (PUSH and Rainbow Coalition) merged.

His international roles include working independently to free prisoners who rebelled against the US regime. During the 1990s, before the Persian Gulf War, he worked to free hostages and secure the release of three American soldiers during the Kosovo conflict.
