Jessica Simpson's 'Heart Was Completely Broken' amid Split from Eric Johnson. How Making New Music 'Saved' Me (Exclusive)

Jessica Simpson’s first song from her new EP: Nashville Canyon: 1. Part Drops this week and she reveals a story behind her very personal songs, exclusively in this week’s People.

“I threw a real turn of fate in the middle of the recording of this board,” says the star, 44. “My heart was completely broken. I had to still focus on music. Thank God I had Nashville.”

In January, she and her husband are 10 years old, Eric Johnson, 45, with whom she shares three children, Maxwell, 12, Ace, 11, and Birdie, 5, announced their cleft.

“Eric and I live separately, moving in a painful situation in our marriage,” Simpson said in a statement for people. “Our children come first, and we focus on what is best for them.”

“I went through the darkest time, which kept me in the most part in an unusual way,” she says about their separation. “I grew up so much. I can wear so much. It wasn’t easy.”

Still, he adds, “I’m strong – maybe I’m just meant to love a lot of people in my life.”

The singer and fashion mogul found healing with the creation of music in Nashville, where she started working in the fall of 2023.

“Having this creative way out, it’s like your heart breaks down and you get into the songwriter of songs – like entering straight into therapy,” she thinks. “I always said it was a lot when people said that music saved my life, but she really saved mine.”

The new EP, 15 years since her latest album, is made up of five tunes of Soul and Rockabilly infused. The first single “uses my heart against me” fell on Friday. “It was a sexy writing song,” Simpson says to the people. “I had a lot of things written in my magazines-I realized I set out on my phone and I would just give my written writers and they turned it off together.”

The result is her most comfortable music so far. From the whole EP, of March 21, she says, “I could never return to music if I hadn’t come from a mental place. I knew about me, it was associated with my roots.”

And Simpson is excited about what is ahead. “I’m a very long break from music in the music industry,” she says. “The musical side of storytelling is really what I gravitate to. Songs speak for themselves. Music really speaks.”
