She explains how she overcomes her worries and loves her natural hair.

Dallas Weekly COO Jessica Washington recently spoke with WFAA’s Tashara Parker. In her talk, Washington discusses how she overcame her fears to adopt her natural hair and the importance of changing stereotypes about black hair and what is appropriate for work. She discussed her hair journey with WFAA on an episode of Rooted. Here is that story.

Conversation

Parker, Tashara: Talk about your hair history. When it comes to your hair, what are the levels, exfoliation, any of those levels for me?

Jessica Washington: Absolutely. So, there was a specific period in my life when I didn’t think I could confidently sport my natural hair. I was so insecure that I didn’t even notice. I remember making it clear in front of my female friends who wore natural hair that I had no intention of going down that path.

They did the action. And I went the other way. And I phrased it in a way that suggested I was on a better path and didn’t want to give the impression that I had something to hide.

They did the action. And I went the other way. And I said it in a way that suggested that I was on a better path, as if I didn’t want to give the impression that I had to follow this particular path. Maybe you’re confident and you know, and you can do it, it came out like in the early 2000s. However, because I didn’t feel confident, I judged others who did, which is a hateful move.

After giving birth to my son, I began to think about what kind of mother I wanted to be. For example, what kind of lady did he want her to bring home; for example, she wanted me to bring someone who shared my insecurities and required me to wear straight hair because otherwise no one would find me attractive. I just realized that in order to make him want something better, I need to improve myself first.

Tashara Parker: So when you say “be natural,” explain it to someone who doesn’t know what we’re talking about.

Jessica Washington: My hair was cut completely short to reveal my natural curl after I went from straight to, ugh, again. When I made the decision to transition, I had to mentally prepare myself for all the uncomfortable questions I would have to answer. And I, I was in no way prepared for that.

Parker Tashara: How did you end up mentally preparing yourself for such situations?

Jennifer Washington: You have to be very direct in your communication with others and not afraid to express your views clearly. It took me a while to realize that there’s nothing wrong with saying things like “I don’t want to put harmful chemicals in my hair anymore” or “I just want a different path” instead of just saying “Oh, I’m just trying something new.” “.

I have this hairstyle. The fact is that I was not deliberately maligned; they really had no idea. I guess I had to match my level of discomfort with his questions and realize there’s a middle ground. Although it wasn’t combative, I think I changed my mind about a few things by the end of the conversation.
