Rant screen: Ben, part 2 is about hope and love overcoming difficulties in the face of darkness. But Xiao Hei really doesn’t have that much. If he met Alina a century ago, do you think he might have found salvation, or do you think he was too obsessed with power and the love of power back then?
Ben Barnes: I think that’s a really good question. At the end of the first season, we have some little teases about what his life might have been like a century ago. And I think he has the core of a man inside of him rather than a general. Inside, you can see where he’s coming from. There is love, there is hope, there is joy. There’s a more elegant way to do things, and I think he’s being pretty blind in his way of doing things. Frustration and anger increase, betrayal adds up…
I’m not making excuses for this cruel, useless villain, but I think the interesting thing about season 2 for me is to show where the little cracks of hope and vulnerability lie. [are]. If you really want to see the intoxication and darkness, it has to be balanced with something. As you said, you have to see the potential to see any hope.
I think what’s interesting about this show is that we have 16 main characters and they all have the potential to go dark; they are all capable of hope and happiness, and they are all capable of love. Jessie Mei Li: One of the things I love about Alina is that she went through such a journey from the first season to the end of the second season. Reading the script of the first season, my impression of Alina was that she was very scared; she was very scared. In season 2, we see her mature. It’s not so much fear as courage. We see that she’s scared, but she’s getting over it. I find that worth mentioning; when you see someone weak and vulnerable trying as hard as they can. What I really like is, like you said, at the end of the season there’s a little hint that we can move away from it and move into a field where she’s no longer brave but fearless. She’s been on this journey, which can be dangerous as a personality trait. I think it’s really interesting.
It was interesting to dive into these parts of Alina, parts that weren’t necessarily in the book but were included by our writers, with lots of real-life experiences mixed in. You can really feel that arc and feel that character grow and change.
Daisy, Genya took a surprising turn this season, considering how she was treated by royalty and dark forces, as well as dealing with the trauma she endured. How does it feel to explore this side of the character in this way?
Daisy Head: I think it’s very powerful. I think it’s inevitable that all humans will at some point feel and face some pain in their lives, and we have no choice about it. But where we have a choice is how we get over our suffering, whether we allow ourselves to suffer or use what we suffer to enhance our character and work through it anyway. life.
I really appreciate this aspect of Genya. Obviously, it has an effect on her, but she uses it to try to get better, to be better, to do the morally right thing. I think it’s very powerful and a great lesson that while you can’t choose your pain, you can choose your pain.
