Harbaugh made the decision to join Bo Schembechler’s Michigan Wolverines football team in February 1982. Before arriving at Michigan, he had “a reputation as a polished California high school passer.”
As a true freshman in 1982, Harbaugh, then 18, and junior Dave Hall served as Steve Smith’s backups. Steve Smith broke the Michigan single-season record for total offense in 1981 with 2,335 yards. Smith started each of the team’s 12 games during the 1982 campaign, with Hall serving as a limited reserve. Coach Schembechler expressed reluctance to play Harbaugh despite Smith’s struggles, saying, “To pull a freshman out of the bag all of a sudden, I don’t think you can do that in today’s football.” In 1982, Harbaugh played no action, recorded no stats and retained four years of eligibility under the NCAA’s redshirt rule.
In the 1987 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears selected Harbaugh in the first round (26th overall). Harbaugh completed just one of his 15 throws against St. Louis Cardinals on August 27, 1987, while playing for head coach Mike Ditka. He appeared in six games as a reserve during the regular season. On November 22, Harbaugh played just one snap in a 30–10 win over the Detroit Lions before being sacked 15 yards. On December 14, Harbaugh threw his first NFL touchdown pass in a 41–0 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He completed 8 of 11 passes (72.7%) for 62 yards, was sacked three times for 30 yards and gained 15 yards on three carries.
