His father, Naval Hormusji Tata, is a businessman who served as director and vice chairman of Tata Sons. He died of cancer in Mumbai on May 5, 1989. After the death of Naval Tata’s father and mother, he was adopted from an orphanage by Ratanji Tata’s wife Navajbai.
His mother’s name was Sooni Commissariat (deceased). Jimmy’s parents divorced in 1948, after which Ratan and Jimmy were raised by their grandmother Navajbai Tata.
In the interview, Ratan talked about his parents’ divorce and said he and Jimmy faced a lot of bullying because of it. He said,
I had a happy childhood, but as my brother and I grew older, we faced our fair share of arguments and personal discomfort due to our parents’ divorce, which was not as common at the time as it is today. But my grandmother raised us in every way. “
His brother Ratan Tata is an Indian industrialist, philanthropist, and former chairman of the Tata Group and its subsidiaries. He died on October 9, 2024.
His half-brother Noel Tata is chairman of Trent and Tata Investments, managing director of Tata International, and vice chairman of Titan Corporation and Tata Steel.

After completing his formal education, Jimmy Tata started his career working with his father in the textile business of Tata Sons.
