The drama, set in the 1980s, promises to be a strong female-led story. Anna Symon (Mrs Wilson, The Essex Serpent) wrote it.

As a doting and devoted young mother to Debbie, we first meet Joan in her twenties, a feisty, uncompromising, and alluring figure who is not without her own deep scars and fragility. Joan is in a catastrophic marriage to a violent gangster, and when he flees, she seizes the opportunity to flee her old life.
Joan faces some heartbreaking decisions as she strives for a better life, motivated by her desire to care for Debbie and provide a secure home for her daughter.
We follow the twists and turns in Joan’s life, the ups and downs, the grief and joy, which makes her story a captivating television drama, making full use of her acute intelligence, charisma, and gift for mimicry and performance.

Richard Laxton (The Thief, His Wife, and the Canoe) directs Joan, while Paul Frift (Good Omens) produces. Ruth Kenley-Letts, Jenny Van Der Lande, and Neil Blair serve as executive producers. Snowed-In Productions (Stonehouse, The Midwich Cuckoos) is behind the show.
