Healey has been in a relationship with Joanna Lydgate, a lawyer and her former assistant in the attorney general’s office, for nearly two years. Lydgate currently serves as the CEO of a Washington, DC-based nonprofit working to defend our imperiled democracy.
Healey has been pretty secretive about this aspect of her personal life up until now. However, she acknowledged that it is necessary to share more about herself as governor than as a state attorney. In addition, the women and their families are already ready for the couple to enter the scene.
Healey said on Friday night, while holding Lydgate’s hand on a sofa in the governor’s rented residence in North Cambridge: “Today I feel extremely lucky to be able to tell this story. Just before the election, Healey moved unannounced into a two-story apartment, a former bakery in a three-story neighborhood.
The governor stated: “This is a person I love very much and for whom I have great respect and admiration.”
Since 2010, when they both began working in the civil rights division of the attorney general’s office under Martha Coakley, she and Lydgate have become friends. Lydgate worked on Healey’s campaign to succeed Coakley in 2014 before joining her office and rising to the position of chief policy officer before eventually becoming Healey’s top deputy.
He left in the summer of 2020 to co-found and lead The States United Democracy Center, a Washington, DC-based nonprofit that files lawsuits to defend voting rights. Along with the District of Columbia, they filed a lawsuit against the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers for the January 6 riots.
They claimed that their romance did not begin until a few months after Lydgate left the attorney general’s office.
We were always pretty close because we worked together in the office, Healey added. We realized that it goes beyond just being best friends after we stopped working together, and it’s been a really nice and unexpected ride.
By then, Healey had already separated from his longtime partner. And, Lydgate continued, she and her husband were also “lovingly and mutually” separated. Their separation will soon be legally binding. She and her husband, a consultant who advises nonprofit organizations, share custody of her two children, ages 9 and 11, with each parent living in foster care part-time.
He went to the opening ceremony with Lydgate and their children, along with his new partner. They often communicate as a contented modern extended family.
Lydgate, 42, and Healey, 51, have a lot in common, including a shared history, shared ideals, a love of basketball and quite a social circle. Even before they were born, the Governor knew and adored the Lydgate children, who also spent much time with the extended Healey family.
When you have kids, it’s hard to start over, Lydgate noted. However, I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to do this with someone with whom I have shared so many experiences. In their lives, children “experience many different kinds of love,” Lydgate added.
“I was married to a man for a long time, so it was definitely a slow, gradual realization for me,” Lydgate said. But it was also absolutely amazing, like my existence suddenly made sense. Her husband was the first person to whom Lydgate communicated the fact that she had feelings for Healey, and he did not.
