It would be a bit of a stretch to describe former naval officer John “Jock” Willink as “intense”, just like describing Mount Everest as “big” or Antarctica as “cold”.

During his 20-year military career, Willink, a radio recruit, rose through the ranks to command Navy SEAL teams in one of the most significant engagements of the war.

During the eight-month battle for Ramadi, then the center of the Iraqi insurgency, Willink commanded Task Force Bruiser, which saw some of the most violent fighting of the entire conflict.

That’s when Jock’s story began. Willink will manage training for all West Coast SEAL teams until he retires from the Navy in 2010.

“Extreme Ownership: How US Navy SEALs Lead and Win,” a book he co-authored with fellow SEAL Leif Babin, is the result of his leadership and follow-up experience. His current roles include founding the executive consulting firm Echelon Front and serving as the host of his own podcast, “The Jocko Podcast.”

So that people pay attention when Willink speaks. He is noted for the remarkable silence that fell over the TEDx audience when he walked into the room to give a talk on leadership at the University of Nevada in 2017.

In his TEDx talk, Willink touches on some of the same ideas he discussed in “Extreme Leadership,” but this time in the context of a short story detailing the fighting that took place in Ramadi in the spring of 2006.

“Brutal and determined terrorists have ruled the streets with torture, rape and murder,” he said. “All hell broke loose during the operation I commanded in a part of the city. On the front line we fight with several units against the enemy.

He talked about how the Iraqi military, its SEALs and members of the US Army and Marine Corps participated. The cloud of war, he claimed, then descended, bringing with it confusion, lawlessness, gunfire, blood and death.

Throughout the speech, the audience is so still and focused on Willink’s words that you can hear everything moving behind the scenes if you pay close attention. He pauses, and the only sound in the room is the air.

“In that fog of war, through a series of human mistakes and errors, Murphy’s Law and poor judgment, a terrible fire broke out,” Willink recalled. “This fire was tragic between us and us. It was not between us and the enemy.”

He argued that fratricide was the worst aspect of battle and the cardinal sin of combat. The belief that problems can be solved and future events prevented only by taking ownership of what goes wrong is what he calls the “brutal teacher” of excessive ownership.
