Jodie Turner-Smith and Joshua Jackson shielded her from the limelight
Since their daughter’s arrival, Jackson and Turner-Smith have kept their little one out of the public eye by not sharing her face on social media, but they have shared sweet snaps from their family life.
In September 2020, Jackson spoke of his and Turner-Smith’s “whirlwind year” since becoming parents in a birthday tribute to the actress. “Happy birthday my beautiful wife,” he wrote at the time. “Thank you for choosing to share your light with me. Thank you for walking this path of life as my wife. Thank you for bringing our daughter into the world. This past year has been the happiest whirlwind of my life. I can’t wait to see what will bring us all the years to come.”
In November 2021, Turner-Smith gave a cute peek at their daughter while sharing a Thanksgiving post. Alongside a photo of Jackson and their daughter’s feet, she wrote: “I am most grateful to you.”
She is “hyper-verbal”
While speaking with PEOPLE at The Barbara Berlanti Heroes Gala Benefitting F— Cancer in October 2022, Jackson talked about his then-two-year-old daughter, describing her personality at the time.
“Job [of being a parent] is constant because she’s a constantly new version of herself,” Jackson explained. “I think so [you have to be] open to the fact that you have to rediscover your child all the time.
“But the biggest part right now is that she’s so hyper-verbal and very, very stubborn. And I just enjoy being able to talk to her,” he said of his little one.
Jackson, however, said his daughter never hesitated to show her feelings. “The thing is, the opinions were there before the words. There was never any doubt that she knew what she wanted, but now she is able to fully express what she wants,” he said.
She changed the way Joshua Jackson approaches work and life
During the interview with MR PORTER magazine published in July 2021, Jackson discussed fatherhood, noting how it has changed his own perspective in “every possible way.”
“The way I approach my work and life has changed 100 percent. This has become clear to me in the past year. In order to feel good about what I do day in and day out, my family has to be the center of attention,” he explained.
Jackson also told the magazine that he can’t wait to see “the world through his daughter’s eyes.”
“I still have a lot of things left to do, but what excites me right now is experiencing the world through my daughter’s eyes,” he said. “I can’t wait to take her snorkeling. I can’t wait to take her skiing. I can’t wait to read a great book with her.”
She also taught Jodie Turner-Smith many lessons
In an interview with ELLE UK released in March 2023, Turner-Smith spoke candidly about raising a biracial daughter, noting that her daughter will have a “completely different experience” than either parent because she is both black and white.
“She’s going to have a completely different experience in the world than I did, because I gave birth to a mixed race girl,” Turner-Smith told the newspaper. “It’s interesting because I had a lot of resistance to becoming a mother and throughout my life I always said that if I had children, I wanted to have black, black babies so that I could affirm them as loving children. I felt that I needed to be validated by the outside world.”
However, when Turner-Smith fell in love with Jackson, her feelings changed. “Choosing not to have a child with someone you love just because they’re white was crazy to me. But at the same time, I had this little break where I thought, ‘She’s going to walk the world not only do I have the experience which I didn’t have, but I look like people who, in a way, always made me feel a little bit tormented,’ Turner-Smith admitted.
She added that her daughter helped her “heal” her feelings about colorism. “Now that I have this little, tiny, bright boss, I feel like the universe is teaching me lessons,” she continued. “I got a daughter who looks like this to heal my own conversations about colorism.”
Jodie and Joshua worked hard to keep her grounded
During the interview with ELLE UKTurner-Smith also discussed raising a “nepo baby” and how she and Jackson worked hard to keep their daughter down to earth despite having famous parents.
“It’s a big job to prepare children for the world,” she explained. “The best thing we can do is let them touch the ground and be grounded and real — as real as a human can be when you have the level of privilege that my kid obviously has. I don’t act like she’s not a non-baby. But I tried like hell to have a child!”
He usually travels with his mom for work
In an interview with Stare released in December 2022, Turner-Smith spoke openly about balancing her career and motherhood.
While she noted that “historically, women have always been asked to choose between being great mothers and being great in their careers,” she said Jackson “always tried to make the case that I would always have all the support I needed to be could do both.”
“Right now, my daughter still comes with me most of the time, except when I go on trips of less than a week. That has worked for us so far,” she explained. “Obviously it’s challenging because I don’t want to create a space where my husband can’t see her while she’s working.”
