Joe Alwyn Premieres New Film The Brutalist in Venice Over a Year After Taylor Swift Split

Joe Alwyn premieres his latest film at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.

The British actor, 33, is in Venice, Italy, in support Brutalista three-hour post-war epic starring alongside Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones.

The film was directed by Brady Corbet (Vox Lux), centers on Hungarian Jewish architect László Tót (Brody), who survived the Holocaust and headed to America to rebuild his life. It had its world premiere at the festival on Saturday, August 31, and is one of 21 films competing for the festival’s prestigious Golden Lion award.

Brutalist marks Alwyn’s first film since this year Kinds of kindnessin which the star — who wore a black Gucci suit, black leather boots and black-rimmed Gucci sunglasses to the weekend premiere — reunited with Emma Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos after the 2018 Oscar-winning Favorites.

Alwyn’s appearance in Venice comes more than two months after he broke his silence about his split with ex Taylor Swift in an interview with Sunday Times style. (The duo split in April 2023, after six years of dating, PEOPLE confirmed.)

Referring to his break-up with Swift, 34, Alwyn told the paper: “What’s unusual and abnormal about this situation is that, a week later, it’s suddenly become public domain and the outside world is able to influence .”

“So you have something very real suddenly thrown into a very unreal space: tabloids, social media, the press, where it’s then dissected, speculated upon, drawn out of shape beyond recognition,” he continued. “And the truth is that last point, there will always be a gap between what is known and what is said. I have come to terms with that.”

The actor noted that he and the pop star had “mutually” decided to “keep the more private details of our relationship private,” adding: “It’s never been something to be commodified and I see no reason to change that now.”

As for his romantic life, Alwyn did not reveal if he is seeing anyone new: “I’m sure you know, given the level of noise and scrutiny surrounding my past relationship, why I wouldn’t want to just open the door to that kind of thing right now.”

Back in April, a source told PEOPLE that Alwyn is “going out and happy,” adding, “He’s a great guy and doesn’t like drama in any way.”

The actor has “moved on” with Swift and “definitely doesn’t talk bad about her,” the insider continued. “He was in love with her, but it just didn’t work out.”

The source added of his career: “Joe loves acting but can’t stand the attention that comes with it. He is not comfortable in the spotlight.”

Kinds of kindness it’s available digitally on August 27th, then on Blu-ray and DVD on October 8th. Brutalist no release date yet.
