Marriage aside, King now stars on Hulu We were the lucky ones. Series tells the story of the Jewish Kurz family that was separated at the beginning of World War II and is adapted by Georgia Hunter The New York Times The bestseller of the same name, which was published in 2017.

While speaking at the premiere in Los Angeles on Thursday, King told PEOPLE why this was such an important project for her to be a part of, saying, “I mean, it was so important to me because of my own background, first of all.”

“I’m Jewish and I also think it’s so important as the years go by and as more and more Holocaust survivors lose their lives and get older, they will soon be gone. And it’s our responsibility to keep this period in history alive through our industry and I couldn’t be prouder,” she adds.

King says there were “so many days” that were challenging on set, but insisted the cast were there to lift each other up.

“Honestly, there are so many days where we’ve all had our own experiences where it would just be heavy in our hearts, but we’ve really been there to lift each other up and bring levity when we’ve needed it, which has been really wonderful. This cast is fantastic,” the star tells PEOPLE.
