John Manchec, 78, and the individuals he hired for his escape plan were the subject of a two-month investigation that began with a tip from outside the jail, Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers revealed at a news conference on Monday.
In essence, the Sheriff Flowers explained, “the plan is this.” “These people who are on the outside are going to wait until Manchec has a doctor’s appointment and they’re going to kill our corrections officers while he’s at the hospital,” said the speaker.
According to Flowers, the plot called for Manchec’s staff to pepper-spray prison officers and transport him to his private aircraft in neighbouring Fort Pierce so he could fly to France. Manchec is a multimillionaire with dual citizenship in the US and France, according to Flowers.
Manchec was detained in 2014 on 49 allegations of child pornography. Flowers claimed that he moved to his historic house in southern France, the Chateau Pechrigal, after posting a roughly $500,000 bond in order to flee prosecution. He was eventually apprehended in the Dominican Republic in 2020 and returned to Florida, according to the sheriff, after France rejected American efforts to extradite him.
According to the sheriff, Manchec asked for permission to be released from jail in January, claiming that he had several chronic medical ailments and had broken his hip and wrist late in the previous year. The appeal was turned down.
According to Flowers, the escape plan revolved around a doctor’s appointment on April 12. However, at least one of the participants informed law enforcement, which helped detectives dismantle the scheme.
Manchec used the code phrase “paint job” when speaking with his staff about the conspiracy, it was determined after looking through his jail phone records.
According to Flowers, they were to get ready for the escape attempt using his plane, his 140-foot yacht, a black utility van, and other vehicles. Manchec even covered a prisoner’s bail so that they may stay in his house. The sheriff claimed the individual assisted in planning the escape, right down to packing a luggage and his favourite booze.
Flowers claimed that the goal was to return “to his castle in France” and avoid prosecution. With additional charges relating to the escape, Manchec is still being held at the Indian River County Jail. Additionally, two prisoners and two workers were detained and accused of conspiring in the escape plan. An email sent to a lawyer named on Manchec’s court records was not immediately answered.
