John Mayer Celebrates Late Bob Saget's Would-Be 68th Birthday: 'Remembrance Is Our Act of Defiance'

John Mayer remembered his friend, the late comedian Bob Saget, on his 68th birthday on Friday, May 17.

The musician shared a selfie of the two friends on Instagram with the caption: “I miss you the most when I’m exhausted and just want to talk to a friend. I missed you when this magician was performing at this party I was at, and he was totally fine, and I knew you’d chime in with insanely funny one-liners, even if I couldn’t imagine what you’d say.”

Mayer, 46, continued: “I just miss you. We all miss you. The loss may be beyond our control, but the memory is our act of defiance. And we will never forget you. I love you Bob. Happy birthday.”

Kelly Rizzo Celebrates Late Husband Bob Saget’s 68th Birthday: ‘Forever Celebrated, Forever Loved’

The announcement was one of many for Saget, who died suddenly in January 2022 at the age of 65. The late actor’s wife, Kelly Rizzo, shared her own memories of Saget, posting a photo from the last birthday dinner they enjoyed together along with a cute story from the night. “Forever celebrated, forever loved, forever remembered, forever in all our hearts,” she wrote.

His Full house costars also paid tribute, as John Stamos shared a group photo of everyone gathered at his home after Saget’s funeral. “Although Bob wasn’t physically there, his spirit was undeniably present, enveloping us in warmth and shared memories that brought both laughter and tears,” the actor wrote in the description.

Mayer and Saget have been close friends for years, from dinners together in Los Angeles to teaming up at charity events. Saget traveled to Brazil with the musician to celebrate Mayer’s 40th birthday in 2017, while Mayer sang at Saget’s wedding to Rizzo in 2018.

The guitarist previously remembered his late friend in January, on the second anniversary of Saget’s death. “Two years ago today, the whole world lost Bob Saget. He was the tallest flower in the garden,” Mayer wrote on Instagram at the time. “His absence is like a constant presence. I’ll never forget him. I love you, Bob.”

John Mayer says ‘Grief is a journey’ as he remembers friend Bob Saget a year after his death

In September 2022, the “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” singer opened up to PEOPLE about his three-hour conversations with Saget that “expanded time and space.”

“I’m thinking, as we all are, ‘Well, that was a nice dinner. I can’t wait to see him again,'” he said at the time. “But on the way home, [I’d get] a huge text that Bob dictated into his iPhone, and half of that text was written by him on Siri. But these incredibly full texts, after sitting with him for three hours, get another text of this expression of kindness and love.”

“He’d take it in the car and say ‘I’ve got to let that man know how special tonight was,’ and that’s a legacy for me,” he said of Saget. “Just letting people know as much as you can, not only that you love them, but that the things you do together are meaningful. I don’t think we let each other know how meaningful those things are.”
