John Pelletier Wikipedia, Wiki, Obituary – As Hawaii struggles to recover from a deadly wildfire that broke out on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, Maui Police Chief John Pelletier describes ongoing efforts to identify the deceased. This disaster is said to be the worst wildfire to hit the US in more than a century.

Pelletier reported on Saturday, August 12 that only 3% of the entire search area was covered by authorized cadaver dogs. He said that despite the fact that there have already been 96 deaths, “none of us still know the magnitude of it (the forest fire)”. He continued: John has been selected to succeed Tivoli Faauma as Maui County Police Chief as early as November 2021.

During an interview with commission chief Frank De Rego, he admitted to managing SWAT and K-9 teams, working as a detective sergeant in the gang unit, participating in internal affairs and instructing at the police academy. Additionally, he was in charge of the Las Vegas Strip during a series of shootings that occurred there in 2017.
When asked why he would be a good fit, John Pelletier said, “My experience working with the Las Vegas Police Department will help me lead the department in one of the largest tourist destinations in the world.” He wanted, in his words, “to restart the whole department.”
He made it a priority to address the many racial, ethnic, and cultural issues during his tenure to ensure that all Hawaiians feel “that they have equal protection under the law.”

The disaster devastated almost the entire town of Lahaina, leaving only ashes behind. The governor, Josh Green, said at least 2,200 structures were damaged or completely destroyed, costing about $6 billion.
Pelletier noted that it is challenging to identify the deceased because anything they pick up remains degrades. However, only two people have been identified. John Pelletier also suggested that those who have lost loved ones undergo a DNA test to “identify loved ones.” Authorities are still seeking the identity of the deceased.
