John Roland News Anchor Wikipedia, Obituary, Wife, Md, Bekley – A representative for Fox Television Stations reported that John Roland, who worked for Channel 5 in New York for more than three decades as a reporter and anchor, passed away on Sunday. He was 81.

Roland left KTTV in Los Angeles in December 1969 to work as a general assignment correspondent for sister Metromedia station WNEW in New York. Before taking over for Bill Jorgensen on the nightly flagship programme at 10 p.m. in 1979, he covered politics on the weekdays and hosted the 10 p.m. show on the weekends. (The station was taken over by News Corp. and Fox in 1986, and its name was changed to WNYW.)
Roland retired to Florida in June 2004 after leaving the 10 p.m. position in 2003 to anchor brand-new newscasts at 5 and 6 p.m.
He added on the radio as he left, “I want to thank you for bringing me into your home for all these years. I never took the invitation for granted and always viewed it as an honour.
Years of working alongside Roland resulted in Rosanna Scotto saying, “Sitting next to John was always a learning experience. He took great delight in his straightforward communication and writing. Anchoring next to him during the 9/11 attacks made it more obvious.
Roland, a native of Pittsburgh, attended California State University at Long Beach and graduated in 1964. Two years later, he joined NBC News in Los Angeles. He covered the 1968 Robert F. Kennedy assassination and other breaking news topics for KTTV.
Three armed guys barged into the former Racing Club in Manhattan in 1983 as Roland and a buddy were eating a late supper there. They demanded money. Before the other two robbers attacked him, Roland shot one of them in the leg after disarming him.
When he argued with a homeless woman on air in 1988, he was suspended and later allowed to return. He experienced diverticulitis in 2002 and nearly passed away while at work; he later told viewers about his near-death experience.
In films like Hero at Large (1980), Eyewitness (1981), The Scout (1994), and The Object of My Affection (1998), Roland made appearances as a reporter or as himself.
