Jon B has strong feelings about artists who sample his old music.
During the July 31 episode Can we talk R&B? podcast, the R&B singer, 49, recalled one of the more recent samples of his 1997 hit “They Don’t Know,” which is featured on Chlö Bailey and Gunna’s 2022 single “You & Me” — which uses lyrics from Jon’s famous hook on the intro and chorus and interpolates his guitar licks throughout — which he obviously wasn’t feeling.
“They put out that awful record that I couldn’t stand, and I wish they never did,” Jon said bluntly. “[They] I never actually even got my rights to do that record, so, Gunna, we got to shout about it… That’s some business— that we got to deal with.”
Despite criticizing Bailey and Gunna’s collaboration, the singer-songwriter said the samples of his ’90s classic appearing on the newer records “compliment what we’ve done”.
“It is [producers and co-songwriters] Tim & Bob compliment, that’s my compliment. But at the same time, my track is my track and my area is my area, and I’ve earned it,” he continued. “If you’ve made a hit in your area, you sing your song whatever it is, I’m not just going to come to your territory, take your joint and make it mine and then I won’t pay you or whatever.”

Gunna, 31, and Bailey, 26, have yet to address Jon’s recent comments on “You & Me,” which ended up going viral on social media. On Valentine’s Day 2022, the couple paid homage to the Grammy-nominated singer’s ’90s hit in their music video, nostalgically referencing the public speaker scene that appears at the beginning of Jon’s original video.
That same month, Gunna spoke with Revolt TV about working with Bailey on their collaboration, saying, “It was something different.” “It was unexpected for my fan base and even for her,” added the “Ski” rapper.
“Because historically, I’ve never seen her do a song with different rappers. I wanted to do something different and bring that into both of our worlds – let them know that we’re both really creative artists because she is too. Chloe is really passionate about her music as I am. It was really stupid to go in, lock yourself up and release a song.”
Chloe Bailey confirms her second album will feature a new Chloe x Halle song: ‘Just Felt Like Old Times’
Gunna recently released his latest studio album, One of the Wun, back in May. Meanwhile, after much teasing, Bailey is preparing to drop her second album, Trouble in paradiseon Friday 9.8.
The “Boy Bye” singer confirmed the arrival of her project on Monday by posting its royal blue cover — which shows her lying in water with her eyes closed while wearing a neon green dress and brushing a string of pearls around her neck — on social media. She wrote: “A storm is coming.”
