After high school, he attended Muskingum College in Ohio, where he played fullback and earned a degree in communications. He began his coaching career at the University of Tennessee as a graduate assistant in 1986.

Gruden’s first NFL coaching job was as an offensive assistant with the San Francisco 49ers in 1990. He then became the Green Bay Packers’ receivers coach from 1992 to 1994.
