Jonathan Bennett is used to the holiday spirit year-round.
The actor, 43, who has starred in a number of Christmas-themed projects — including the recently released one Annual Greetings from Cherry Lane — tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview that there’s a certain time of year when it’s better to make a festive film.
“We usually make Christmas movies during the summer,” he says. “So you’re wearing all these heavy clothes, but you look like you’re sweating under them. You’re just wet with sweat under all your fur coats.”
“But this year I got to do something for the first time in my life, which is to make a Christmas movie on Christmas Day,” Bennett continues. “So I was in warm clothes for the first time ever, because I was supposed to be in warm clothes. That was really fun.”

According to Bennett, however, the difference is shooting a holiday-themed movie during one part of the year versus another.
“I’m not going to lie. I kind of like shooting in the summer better,” the star — who will soon be documenting the New Year’s ball drop with Snapchat and previously shared a BTS look at her latest vacation project on the social media platform — says.

“I’ve been complaining about it for so long… [but] in fact, it is much more effective in the summer. Because in the winter you’re cold and the crew moves a little slower and you move a little slower,” Bennett continues.
“Where it’s in the summer, it’s hot and I think there’s more liveliness for everyone on set,” he adds Mean girls alum.

Bennett documented himself filming his untitled Christmas movie in an Instagram post on Monday, December 16.
“Tis the season to make movies,” he wrote in the caption.
In the video, which was soundtracked by Brenda Lee’s iconic holiday song “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” Bennett could be seen standing outside a church at night.
“For the first time in my life, I’m making a Christmas movie at the right Christmas time,” he added in the text of the second-long clip.
