Jonnie Irwin opens up on friends who let him down following cancer diagnosis

Escape to the Country star Jonnie Irwin has opened up about feeling unsupported by some friends following a devastating terminal cancer diagnosis.

The TV personality, who confirmed he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2020, attended the Tric Awards in June, where he was open about the situation, telling The Sun that he was there with Channel 4 colleagues including Jules Hudson and Nicki Chapman “meaning all to me”.

He added: “I consider these people my family. People that I thought would support me, they didn’t. But the people in this game did what I hoped they would and more. This is my boss and she’s been by my side every step of the way, personally and professionally, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have her in my life.”

Jonnie, who has three sons with partner Jessica, previously revealed that Channel 4 had terminated his contract with him due to his diagnosis on A Place in the Sun, explaining: “It’s heartbreaking. It broke my heart I feel so disappointed I can’t even watch the show now.

“Although I look thinner and have no hair, Escape to the country and A Place In The Sun Ltd, who run the exhibits on the show, hired me and I was impressed… But I didn’t get that support from A Place Under the Sun He said I told them I wanted to work When I said, “I can get you medical papers and assurances from my oncologist that I’m healthy enough to work,” I was literally told, “Oh, you really don’t want to go down that road, do you?”

A statement from Channel 4 read: “Jonnie has been a hugely important part of the A Place in the Sun family for over 18 years and we are all deeply saddened by his diagnosis. tried to get Jonnie to continue filming internationally with us during Covid but the production company was unable to procure proper insurance for him.
